Default Towing capability, real world.

I would like to know the weight of trailers any of you have towed sucessfully with a similat truck to mine.

Mine is a 2002 Silverado 1500 ext cab. with the 4.8.

We are looking into getting a travel trailer to do some camping. I have no problem with adding a tranny cooler and the brake module, I would consider both of these a must.

What I want to know is how well does it tow and did you mod yours in any way, moderately, like programming.

I know the best thing would be to get the 2500HD but that is out of the question.

Thanks guys!!

I use to tow a 30' 6200# Fleetwood Prowler travel trailer. It didn't like steep hills to much, but it got the job done. I did have a 373 w/ an Auburn posi put in. I also towed with the 3"/4" drop useing airshocks and a wieght distribution hitch.

Scott, I have a 02 Silverado Ext. 4X4 3.73 rear,4.8,only mod is UPD. I tow a Coleman popup with the slide out, my weight loaded up is about 4,000 lbs. It tow's just great, no problems with those big hills. Just drop it down a gear, keep the rpm up. In the "real word" rate your towing at 80% of the factory rating. Like if your truck is rated to tow 7,000 lbs don't plan to pull more 5,600 lb.This is the advice I hear in RV newsgroups. Do install a transcooler if your truck does not haveone.

Thanks guys!!

Me and the crew are heading out to look at one now. It sounds like what we are looking for. It is a '01 Kodiak 21' that only weighs 3000# . It is supposed to be the lightweight models. I will let you guys know how it goes.

Thanks again for the quick replies.

I pull a 18ft steel flatbed trailer with a 3100lb racecar on it and about 1200lb worth of rims, tires, tools, and what not. I have the 3.42 rear end and it pulls fine. You have to stick your foot in it quite a bit more but it pulls better than my old 4.6 ford did.

I'd say get the distribution hitch, and if you are worried about weight, there are several manufactures that make light weight travel trailers...
