Tow Truck Help
#5
The ride will be a big big! difference. I have a 2002 2500 HD 4X4 extended cab (duramax). The 2500 is a 3/4 ton truck that rides much rougher than any 1/2 ton chevy I have had, even my 98 extended cab 1500 Z71. However, if your pulling much over 6000 lbs you will like the 3/4 ton handling.
FYI my 98 1500 extended cab Z71 with tow package pulled my car hauler and car a total of 6,000 lbs + - just fine. I got the new 2500 for my travel trailer.

1500HD is really a ¾-ton truck (8600gvw).
2500HD is really a 1-ton truck (9200gvw).
The frame on the 2500HD is stronger & taller (that's why they sit ~2 taller).
1500HD only comes with 6.0 & 4L80E automatic.
2500HD can get:
· 6.0 with 4L80E or 5-speed manual
· 8.1 big block with Allison auto or 6-speed man.
· 6.6 Duramax turbo diesel with Allison or 6-speed.
1500HD has a 9.5" 14-bolt Semi-floating rear end (3.73 or 4.10).
2500HD with 6.0 has a 10.5" 14-bolt Full-floating rear end (4.10 only).
2500HD with 8.1 or Dmax has a 11.5" Full-floater (big ****).
2500HD has a couple more leaf springs out back, thus rougher ride while unloaded.
2500HD has slightly larger brakes.
Wheels & tires are rated the same.
2500HD is a little heavier, thus cutting into overall GVWR, (and slower <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" /> ).
1500HD is shorter, (easier for the ladies to get in <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" /> ).
Other than that, they are basically the same. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />
