Default Torsion bars

Hey I have heard from some other guys that you can raise the front of the truck slightly on the front by tighting the torsion bars. Well I was changing the oil for the first time tonight and I see the bolts that they are talking about...and I got to looking at the truck and it seems like it sits higher on the driver's side by about a 1/2" I was thinking about getting under it and seeing if I could level it out.
I was wondering if anyone had messed with them or if they are suppose to set a little higher on the one side.

Thanks

from what i have read on fullsizechevy's offroad forum, and all my friends that have a z71s and 4x4s they are not tightened up. when you do you will have less travel on the front. my cousin has a 98 z71 with 33s and a 3 inch body, he had to crank his up (but not all the way) and it rides ruff. the more you crank them the less travel you have, so i have heard/read.

The old Chrysler products had torsion bars and when you adjusted them it changed the alignment as well as made for a rougher ride. Just don't go too far and the ride will probably be ok but you will need to get it realigned.

I cranked mine up about two inches but mine was the opposite of yours. My driver's side was a 1/2 lower than the passenger side.

I measured from the ground, up to the bottom of the fender flare. Stock on the passenger side 38.5" and the driver's side was 38". I lifted them both so that they were 40.25 - 40.5", dropped the truck, drove it to settle the suspension and re-measured. Both after a few adjustments are 40 & 1/8th.

FYI, Larry. There is some standard adjustablility in them without the need for an alignment. They allow us to crank them up for reasons such as carryin the extra weight of items like a plow. By cranking them up too far, I'd be more concerned that over time you'd wear out your CV joints.

I took my 2000 Z-71 to the dealer and told them I was dissatified on how low the truck sat in front. They tightened the torsion bars and re-aligned ALL UNDER WARRANTY! No cash out of pocket. Truck is almost level now. They raised it about 1 1/2 in. Give it a try dude and good luck.

mongoose
all that did was lessen the amount of front suspension travel, it looks higher, better but there is less movement in the suspension, and it rides a little harsher now doesnt it?

Hey Brandon, honestly I noticed very little difference in driveability and yes it looks a lot better. Dealer that done this for me was very encouraging on what to expect, and there should not be any premature front end wear. And if there is they will repair it under warranty. I've heard on different forums that the dealer wont touch the factory settings for torsion bars. But mine did and maybe yours can too. From past experience small dealerships are more willing to satify you. Check into it and let me know how it goes......GOOD LUCK!

Mine are cranked just a tad, and I didn't notice any harsher ride. That could just be me though

Well, yea, duh!!! The reason they ride a little harsher is cause you're tightening the spring! That's the whole concept of cranking them up for adding the weight of snow plows and the such so that the front won't droop!
