I did a cam swap a couple weeks ago and have had a ticking in the valvetrain ever since. I figured it was a rocker that backed out a little but I cracked her back open yesterday and they were all still perfect. The inside of the valvecovers also were perfect. So what else is there that could be ticking. I have the 918s but this sound is above the sound of them. Sounds like only one is doing it and I can't hear it at idle, only off-idle and above.

 

Sounds like you may need to readjust your vavle lash. One may have too much lash. Also recheck your pushrods for a slightly bent one. Are your rockers the adjustable type or the non-adjustable ones?
You may need to loosen your rockers nuts and retorque to the "EXACT" torque specs! I'm not too sure, but Ithink they need to be torqued to 22ft lbs. Don't quote me though.

my rockers are non adjustable. I might just try to break them all loose and try again.

 

Yep, 22lb-ft or ft-lb whatever.

Two more questions
1. Does it resemble a sewing machine sound?
2. Did you swap out your pushrods?

Its possible that its your pushrods, if you still have the stockers Id try changing them.

 

Maybe a collapsed lifter?

 

I swapped my stock pushrods for some 7.4 comp ones. It's definitely not the sewing machine sound. I open my hood and here that at idle. Im 100% sure its not that. I do still have the stockers but wanted something a little more sturdy.

 

I second the replacement of the O.E. pushrods. Would be well worth it before you tear everything down again.

Well........It must be in the torque specs of the rockers. Did you torque them down to 22ft lbs the first time? Or just by hand and feel?

How long has it been doing it? I did a cam for a guy a few weeks ago, and at start up it had a ticking sound, but quiclly went away (after a couple of minuites) then started sewing its *** off till we swapped the pushrods

 

I'm just curious because "my" turn is coming up. How do you guys replace the vavle springs without the valve falling down into the cylinder?
Raise the piston all the way to the top or using a threaded air hose fitting in the spark plug hole, using the compressed air to keep the vavle from falling?
