More gear will sometimes take the load off the motor...get the truck moving easier. so if you are doing more low speed driving , lower gear will most likely help.
I went from 3.21 to a 3.90 when I had the 440 in my dodge with a 3 speed 727none OD tranny.
I got 7mpgs in town with the 3.21.......7mpg's in town 3.90 gear...no change.
Also highway didn't change. 3.21 got 9mpgs, 3.90's got 9.5mpgs best.
it seemed with the lower gears it took less throttle to get the truck moving, making the engine work less.
I think with your modern overdrive tranny the 4.10's vs 3.42's will only hurt mpg's above 70mph
1/4 results were 16.3 with the 3.21 gear and 15.7 with the 3.90's
I know the 440 was a turd... thats why I went ls. My truck seems to run very well with the ls1 31 tire and 3.90 gear, hwy rpms seem very nice at 70mph, but I'm still thinking of going 4.56. A few people on here are running a 4.56 and still getting mid-high mpgs on the highway

I think they have established your friend doesn't have a clue what he is talking about. Also you will have to make your mind up as far as going fast or mpg's You can't have both.. 410's and the 3600 stall will do ok, you can prob still get 16 or so on the highway. City driving is where the verter is going to hurt you the most.. As long as you can stay out of the pedal in the city, you will be alright in the mpg's department.. But imo to have a big stall, 342's its like wiping your *** before you ****, doesn't make any sense..
Put the stall in, see how it is, then you can always decide to gear it..

i think 4.10s with that stall would be good but it depends on what size tire you are gonna run too. with the stall in my sig and plannning on the 224 cam im going with 3.90s on a 30.5" tire. just to give you an idea. more experienced people than me will hopefully chime in

So are you wanting a cam with alot of chop to it at idle?? Also a 3600 verter is not going to be ideal for a turbo set up, your set up.. You will want to keep it some what lower. Also in the gear dep, you want a lil bit higher gear with a turbo.. Not that gears will be bad, but a turbo likes to pull, or be loaded. It helps keeping the turbo spooled and stay spooled. I would up to a 373 gear, be on the lines of a 2600 verter for a turbo
