a stock 6.0 and a level III tranny from FLT would take care of you. If you continue to tow the transmission won't last regardless, do it right and be done with it. You can pick up a used 6.0 long block for 1200

Your truck is heavy, period. You would be wasting your time to do anything less than the 6L. The low end TQ difference between my 5.3 and 6L in my Tahoe was very noticeable. Going from a 4.8 to a 6L would feel awesome. While your at it add a mild cam for more TQ and you will love it. The tranny will need attention, most likely replaced....

Do it right the first time, Ive seen people "patch" or keep building their trannys 3 or 4 times at 1200 each time which adds up to 3600-4800 for a 60e Then they finally see the light and buy a GOOD built unit which cost 1800-3000 and then their problems go away. SOOO they spent 5400-7800 on trannys when their initial investement shouold have been 1800-3000! SEE THE LIGHT MY FRIEND, SEE THE LIGHT!!!lol

and then yea cam it, longtube it, tune it. AND run with the big dawgs!

Good lad! And remember: if you're gonna make it run like a scalded dog...make sure your brakes can get it slowed up and whoa-ed up good, too!

Dont waste your time with a 60e, with decent power and tall tires. Im giving up on my 60e after the 5th time, time to swap to an 80e
