The 5.3L is "rated" at 285hp, but I raise a HUGE BS flag on that. They are so sluggish due to tuning I'd lay some money that if you dyno'd one of those on an engine stand, it'd make maybe 240hp IMO. My truck was such a turd before the tune.
I'd say the 02+ would probably dyno 300+ on the engine stand with the factory tune. I know it's mathematically impossible for me to turn the track numbers I do with only 285 at the flywheel.

Well you have a ringer my friend. The '98 Z28 I had years ago was one, maybe the truck I have now was a factory turd, I dunno.

Still, if it really does hit a "peak" of 285hp, I'd lay some money that the average HP is very low

Good. It took two tunes to get it right. It detonated like crazy under WOT with the first one (sounded like a damn popcorn machine). It then got richened up on the next and had no problems. How is yours doing? Are you becoming an ls1 edit guru?
