I am going to pull the LQ4 rods and pistons out of the motor I just bought and put in LQ9 rods and pistons - do I need to have the assembly balanced?

If its a low mileage motor I wouldn't swap out the parts either. To much time and $$ for the increase in compression and the stronger rods IMO. Now if you had started with just a block, I'd say go for it. Everything is mated up just so in that new engine, no need to add more variables than needed at this point.
