Question STS Install Problem - Oil Feed

GM Oil Feed to Turbo

I am installing my STS Turbo and I seem to have run across a problem. I have the 4X4 with oil cooler option. I have the STS instructions for the oil cooler option but not 4X4 as well. I cannot find a way to get the oil cooler flange out of the truck because the lines prevent it from going out the front or back. I cannot get at it in the truck to drill and tap it because the front drive shaft is in the way.

Has anyone done the STS install on a 4X4 with oil cooler option and can you tell me how you did it?

Any suggestions appreciated.

PFU need help, Thanks

Not certian what you are having trouble with but you did mention that front drive shaft was in the way. In the way as will hit oil lines? The front shaft is real easy to unbolt and move out of the way. I did it when putiing in front 02 sensors.

After you undo the u-joint bolts do you take the drivesaft right out of the transfer case or just hang it out of the way to the side? My problem is that the pinion yoke will still be in the way even after I move the shaft.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Thanks for the suggestion.
If you need to remove the front driveshaft, it comes out easily. Remove the bolt at the universal. Remove the metal clamp aroung the boot at the t-case, mark the driveshaft position with a chalk mark on the driveshaft and t-case, and slide it out.

On install, put some waterproof grease on the spline and line up the marks. I replaced the metal clip with a heavy ziptie.

I would love to have some pics to show you. It would make it soooooooo much easier but I don't have a digital camera. Might have to see if I can borrow one if all else fails. I have an email in to STS but who knows how long it will take them to reply. I will try to call them in the AM.

There is a block off plate just above the oil filter that I need to drill and tap for a source of oil for the turbo housing. It has the oil cooler lines coming out of the top of it and I have not been able to get it out of the truck with the lines attached it will not come out without lifting the engine as far as I can tell. I cannot get at it to drill and tap it in place because the front driveshaft u-joint and pinion yoke are in the way. I may have to take the shaft out and remove the pinion yoke to drill it in place but that means resetting the pinion backspacing which I have never done before and is a lot of work. Well I may be stuck doing that like it or not.

Bish - thanks for the info on removing and replacing the front shaft. That may come in handy yet.

Mort, if you haven't heard from STS via email by Thursday, PM me or send me an email and I can give you the phone number to one of the STS reps who knows just what's going on.

Ok.... listen up. I think that the STS kit has just two problems.... simple, yet unaddresed...

#1= Air Filter location(Duh)
#2= oil feed line and valve cover oil cap.

I think that this is the worse design they could have made. Thet went too far in trying to make the kit a Bolt-on kit. I think it would be better off drilled in the top of the pan with the return pump and all. The oil cap leaked on my kit ever since i got it. I had no real problems at all, but I think that there is no reason to have to run a line to a the oil cap when there are plenty other ways to make a better connection to the case and oil system. Drill and tap into a place where it can be much more secure and not on a constantly moving part IMO.
