Strange Transmission sounds?
#1
I bought a Hypertech power programmer, adjusted top speed, max rpm to 6200, shift points to 5mph1-2, 7mph 2-3, 10mph 3-4, opted for more firm shifts, 5.3liter, 3.73 gears, automatic trans, other than a slip in K+N the truck is stock. I was initially happy with what the HPP did for the truck.........then was showing off with a buddy, left the bastard in 3rd gear without realizing it and wound it out in third, 90 plus mph. After the short ride the trans now makes a slight gear whine or maybe and ailing pump type of sound. No one else seems to notice it but they don't drive the truck daily like me. Could I have hurt this thing with one truly aggressive run with those settings? The setting were in the truck for 3 days and I hardly drove it during that time. I will put the programming back to stock and have the dealer look at it when I take it in for recall work.It is luckily still under warranty. Has anyone else had this kind of thing happen, I'm sure you have. Please give me advice if you can. Thanks.

I would really doubt you did anything to it just from those settings. What RPM did it hit when you reved it out? I run my shift points at +3, +10, +1 respectively. When I run my truck at the track I leave it in 3rd gear the whole time, so it never shifts into OD. I'm usually around 92 MPH when I cross the line. So you should be OK from that aspect.

i ran mine to like 93 in second gear one day when it was programmed with a 6200 rpm red line...when i finally let out if it, it came down really slow but went into 3rd gear flawlessly and kept on haulin ***. it was definatly weird though.

I destroyed my transmission just a few days ago... It was making similar noises as you describe, but it was obviously hurt as it took forever to shift, and it wouldn't go in reverse. I'm having to get an entirely new tranny for $3,000. =|

It reveedcout to about 6200 give or take a hundred rpm, I was really watching my speed when it happened alot closer than the tach. It just seemed to take forever to shift into third. The trans seems to shift fine even before i went back to the stock programming. i will see if the dealer gives me any flak for messing with the computer or not.
It is back to stock programming and I'm taking it in for and air bag sensor problem and a slow moving passenger window motor. Thanks man.

I was rolling about 92-95 mph when the thing finally shifted. Maybe I sped up the break in process a little too fast. I now have almost 14k on the truck since last august.
the motor is fine and the trans seems ok except for the new sounds which you only notice at slower speeds because or engine and road noise covering it up. Thanks for your help.

YOU ARE CORRECT SIR. IT SHIFTED OUT OF SECOND INTO THIRD AT ABOUT 93 MPH. THE ENGINE SHIFTED AT 6200 LIKE IT WAS PROGRAMMED TO. I THINK FOR MY TRUCK AT THIS POINT WITH IT BEING STOCK AND ALL, 6200 RPM DOES NOTHING TO MAKE IT FASTER.I TOOK THE TRUCK TO THE DEALER YESTERDAY FOR A RECALL THAT TURNED OUT TO BE FALSE AND SOME WINDOW MOTOR PROBLEMS AND HAD THEM CHECK THE TRANS AS WELL. AFTER TALKING TO THE TECH WHO WORKED ON IT HE TOLD ME MY TRANS WAS FINE, AND THE STRANGE WHINE I WAS HEARING WAS THE POWER STEERING PUMP WHICH AS SPEED PROGRESSES INCREASES PERESSURE FOR HIGHER SPEED DRIVING. I DON'T KNOW IF THIS IS TRUE OR NOT BUT THE SOUND SEEMS TO BE LESS PRONOUNCED THAN BEFORE. IT PUT THE HYPER TECH PROGRAMMER BACK ON AND SET IT UP WITH A 5800 RPM REDLINE AND BUMPED UP MY SHIFT MPHS TO 1ST TO 2ND GEAR +2MPH, 2ND-3RD GEAR+4 MPH AND 3RD TO 4TH +5 MPH AND FIRMER SHIFT SETTINGS. WE WILL SEE HOW IT GOES NOW. THANKS FOR ALL THE CONSTRUTIVE CRITISISM, AND ADVICE.
