stock muffler - worth replacing?
#1
I bought a truck and like the way it is stock. I do not want to get into another project vehicle but I wouldn't mind replacing some weak links. Truck has 100k on it and I was thinking about replacing the muffler. I have had good luck with Magnaflow and that seems to be the choice on here. I do not want something load, or rednecky. Is the 22" a good choice? I am not interested in headers or deleting my cats - i am talking stock exhaust with a new muffler.
I have been reading that the stockers are heavy crap bags and with 100k it probably needs replaced anyways.

Not sure about the life of factory mufflers but the magnflow sounds good on a stock truck, quiet at idle with some noise on moderate/hard accel. I would look into the whole cat-back though. They have a nice polished tip to replace the ugly stock tailpipe.

Depending on which one, the Maggie have a resonance drone on the highway that can wear u down over long drives...that said I have 2 on mine...I kinda like the redneckkie sound! Check the sig for a sound bite...

What kind of truck is it?
If you are really worried about gas mileage and don't want a "race truck", just leave it stock and spend the potential mod money on gas. Even if a muffler gives you .5 more mpg, you'll have to drive a long way just to break even on the money spent to buy/install the muffler.
Everyone here will probably tell you the best mod for mileage is a custom PCM tune. But like above, you're gonna spend $250+ upfront to save a few bucks at each fillup.
That being said, I think the 22" magnaflow would be a fairly quiet muffler with good flow.

Yeah, I don't really think you'll see enough of a gain in MPG to justify it just for that reason. The stock muffler is huge and heavy, and some additional power can be had by just swapping out the stock muffler for a replacement.
The magnaflows are good, some people complain about the drone, I never noticed it so much, but I like them on the louder side. Another good option would be a Hooker Aerochamber. These don't drone much at all IMO and are not that loud. With just a full stock exhaust, the aerochamber would stay pretty quiet, I think the largest is an 18" long body.

I have had several of these trucks and have messed around with mufflers on most of them...
The stock muffler is nice and quiet and is awesome for any distance driving particularly if you are towing. If you are looking for more sound then do it. If you are looking for more mpg's don't waste your money. I have tried complete systems and just muffler swaps. I didn't see any mpg change and no change in performance as rated by a G-Tech. Never had them on a dyno though.
