Default Stock 5.3 needs a streetable cam.

Ive been looking at the Texas Speed 220, and the 224/224 as was recommended in the cam guide write up from ls1tech. Ive been looking at videos of them on youtube and talking to the guys that work at the local hot rod and transmission shop.

Im looking for a streetable cam for a daily driver. Ive had the Magic Stick, Torquer, and Sevel Comp grinds suggested but they are all far to big and would require a 3500+ stall to run correctly. All I want to do is mildly wake up my truck.

Is the GMPP hot cam a viable option? One of the guys I used to race with even said that I should look into the LS6 cam from the corvettes. Ive searched on LS1tech and on here but everything I find seems to be biased opinion. i dont want a monster cam, im just looking to gain 20-30 hp and have a choppy idle with something like a 112* lsa. Would the LS6 cam and springs be a good choice?

212/218 low lift or any of the comp "truck cams...I had the 208/212 with stock converter and a shift kit and I loved it...Very streetable...alot of the guys here like the bigger cams...

Ive had large cams in my LT1 and an old IROC that i dont own anymore. While they flat out rocked for straight line racing I need something that I can drive on the 4-lane 5 days a week but still pick up and haul tail when my foots through the floor.

Is it nessiccary to change the stock springs if you upgrade to just a small cam? I dont recall what the max lift is on the stock springs. I know on my first LT1 car I had to change them when I upgraded to the Gm Hot Cam and it want really all that aggressive. I may go with one of the texas speed packages so I will have new springs and pushrods when i do my build.

Another vote for a 212/218 low lift, you won't loose anything down low and will gain several hp from 2500rpm all the way to the red line. The stock converter works fine with it.

Anything larger and it'll be a turd down low with bigger gains on top.

A set of GM yellow springs work for this cam, they're around $50.

212/218 low lift, and the GM yellow springs with my stock retainers will most likely be my best bet. i still have some headers to install and a knock sensor to replace. When I do settle on a cam and do the install I will post up some pics.

my cam is streetable its all in the tuning..ive tuned several big cammed cars that drive around like stock.. not suggesting using my cam though.. just stating that big cams can be street able.. the comp 212/218 is a good all around cam for a stock converter.. even the 216/224 wouldnt be bad

If you aren't wanting to change the converter go with the 212/218....

I have a question while we are on the subject.. How much diff in power is there between the high lift and the low lift?

I think I read somewhere that a high lift doesn't make a big difference. It had something to do with the stock heads not flowing well over .550 of lift or so.

But I don't remember where I read it lol, so I could be wrong.

Anyone else?
