I'm like you, in that all my money is going into performance before cosmetics, so when I went shopping for the stickiest, best handling tire for stock wheels, the tire rack reviews were all pointing towards the Yokohama H/T-S GO51's.
Yokohama's on Tire Rack.com
I got the 255/70-16's and they are absolutely the best tire I could imagine in this size. they stick good when aired down, and handle great when at recommended pressure.
It looks like they have a nice 275/70-16 that is 31.3" and only $111. That would probably be a cool size to keep the 4x4 look and pick up some street traction.

i have had both the yoko and toyos
toyos are alot better. the yokos where a great jump from the stock tires but they wear real fast. the toyos stick better and last longer. im gunna be gettin 20s soon i will be goin with the toyos again.
