Default stall converter or gears?

im new here but i have been reading alot about stall converters and had a few questions about them. i am still a bit confused on exactly what a higher stall does for you, i understand it allows you to launch at a higher rpm but does it have any effect after launching? for example does it help from like a 40mph-70-mph punch? and what stall is best 2600, 2800, or 3000. also does it affect the regular drivability of the truck? right now i have the crappy 3.42 gears with a open differential and cannot decide wether to invest in a set of 3.73 gears with a posi unit or go with a new stall. which would be the best to get first? thanks in advance for any responses

Default Re: stall converter or gears?

if your haveing traction problems now i would get the gears and posi first, after the stall you wont be able to hook at all without a posi.

the stall helps mostly at the launch but a little up high. from a 20mph punch my truck is visious, from a 40mph punch most of what the stall has to offer is done. the stall does some thing called "gear extention" not exactly sure what that is but some how it keeps you at a higher rpm even after the launch is over. i have the yank3000 and drive it everywhere everyday, even tow prety heavy loads long distances. i really like the 3000 but if your truck is going to be more of a weekend racer type of thing you might go higher.
