Default Solve the mystery of the rattling truck and win a million dollars...

OK, my first assumption would be to assume that this rattle I've had going on is related to the torque converter since it didn't start until shortly after the install. However, the rattle seems to be coming from somewhere back further, under the extended cab section or maybe even under the bed - but not really from under the front floorboard where the tranny is at. So I'm stumped. Billy was even nice enough to ride in the back of the truck and tried to listed for it, but couldn't pinpoint it either.

So if it IS the converter, the sound is playing tricks on me since it seems to be back further, if it's not the converter, I'm stumped. The rattle sounds (best I can describe it) like a very thin sheet of metal vibrating at a pretty high rate of speed. It never does it idling, just when I'm cruising. I can make it go away by goosing the gas, but it's happening more frequently, and I'm hoping someone out there has had a similar problem and may know what the deal is!

Thoughts?

might be the driveshaft vibrating or just the case(outer casing) of the driveshaft

Check where the exhaust pipe goes over the trans crossmember...mine is touching there and is driving me nuts. Man I gotta get it to the exhaust shop

I checked (to the extent possible) the driveshaft the other day when it was on the lift and everything looked fine. Not sure how much inspection is needeed though to rule that out.

Only problem is someone already posted the same answer on LS1truck, so technically I can't give you the reward.

Seriously though, thanks for the reply. I'll have to get under there and look.

Thanks Dave...actually just had the whole exhaust redone, and it's well clear of the crossmember. I appreciate the reply though, thanks!

Two things:

After a couple of trans removals and installs the heat shield above the exhaust on the passenger side under the back seat was touching the exhaust and rattling at only certain rpm.
My buddy has a fuddle in his truck and the clutch went out in it and made the same kinda noise as yours. Turns out the converter he had, had the small lockup clutch assembly and couldnt handle the weight of his truck. Prior to failure it was making weird noises at lockup so since you didnt mention anything about that I would guess option one.
Also you might ought to check your u-joints they can be a PITA to track down, sometimes they will only make noise under certain loads.
Sounds like Billy is a hell of a guy
