Silly question about electic fans.

Default Silly question about electic fans.

To be honest, I didn't notice much of an improvement in performance when I put the LT1 electric fans on my truck. In fact, my time to 90 mph seem to increase some instead of going down. Do you think the LT1 fan shroud could create a drag that would hurt top end performance? The fans are built into the shroud, the shroud covers the radiator. I would think this would hinder air flow through the radiator vs the stock set up especially at higher speeds. Am I way off base here or what?

i doubt it would hurt the airflow. maybe you just caught it on a bad day, or they are drawing more power than they should, and they are taking power away from your ignition

Jim I wouldn't read much into it, probably just a bad day. If anything you gained power and quicker throttle response with the fans. I know I did, the truck is much snappier now than it was before.

Maybe it is the stock muffler you had that was hurting performance or was this after the Magnaflows.

iwhen i put lt1 electric fans on my truch i noticed about .1 difference


red01singlecab chevy
2/4 drop,3.73 posi,throttlebody spacer
23" tires,cutout,25% pullies,
power stering shortbelt,
13.51@100.35 1.925 60'

Before the LS1 Electric fans my truck would never spin tire from a stop even with stock tires.After the Fans I can now Bark the 20's.

No track time but I think .1 might be about right?

I put the stock clutch fan back on to see and I could tell a difference, More than when I installed the LT1 fans. Definitly not as quick and throttle response was off a little.

yea i love my electric fans. main reason is because now there is so much more room under the hood. plus that clutch fan weighs a good amount, and is at the front of the motor which isnt good.

What is involved in putting electric fans on a truck? A freind of mine just got a 00' Silverado and we are trying to come up with some ways to make the truck faster. We have installed a FIPK, HPPIII and cut off the cats and added a Flowmaster exhaust system(I'll be danged if it isn't the BEST sounding set up I have EVER heard!----kinda like a small cammed ls1 with longtubes and a borla cat-back!).

I got my LT1 fans off of E-bay, they were $100 shipped, LS1 fans usually go for more. Remove the stock shroud (top & bottom) and clutch fan. The fan can be a pain to get off, I used a BIG open end wrench (1 5/16") and smacked it with a hammer a few times and it came right off. The LT1 fans I used set right down in the lower radiator support bracket, I made two brackets to hold the top of the fan in place. You can reuse the bolt hoes for the top fan shroud, mine needed a little offset to line up right. I got a wiring relay with a built in thermostat from Kragens auto, Kragens goes by different names around the country. It's made by Imperial Automotive Products and the part number is 226204, it says "fan controller" on the package. Here's a link to the website if you don't have a store near you http://www.partsamerica.com/ . The wiring is pretty straight forward, for two fans, you'll need to get another inline fuse. Each fan has a fused power wire and a ground hooked to it. The relay has a constant red hot wire (battery), a yellow ignition on hot (fuse box), black ground wire and a radiator probe to slip through the radiator fins for the thermostat to work off of. Took about two hours to install for me, pretty simple. Hope this helps!
