Now that I have electric fans that I can set to come on at any temp, should I get a 160* stat to use with my HPP? I was talking with a fellow 5.3L owner at the track an he said putting a 160* stat in his truck made a nice improvement in performance. I was going to flush my cooling system any way, should I pop for the stat while I'm at it?

Iv heard from a few people that 160 can cause excessive fuel consumption. I dont know if this is ture or not but i would like to know also. How do you like your 2400 TC?? Im thinkin about getting one. Im afraid to go any bigger with the stock tranny should I be? Also if I have a predator programer, what brand thermo should I go with, hypertechs or does it matter?

I like the Yank 2400, the truck launches better although tire spin is an issue now. I don't think it matters what brand stat you use, I used Stant stats in the 95 truck because they were just a plain ol stat. For the new trucks, the stat is combined with the housing, all one piece. Hypertech and SLP are the only ones that make one as far as I know.

I ran a 180* in my '99 5.3 and with the HPP3 set for the 160* I had no knocking but didn't really notice a power increase. I did like the fact I dropped my coolant and trans temps down some.
Sometimes if you go too low and not program for it, your truck will stay in Open-Loop (warm up mode) and burn lots of fuel. Tuning for a 160* is the only way to run one. I think by running that cool tho', you may adversly effect MPG/fuel economy.
Hypertech, SLP, and TPIS all sell them. About $50. 180* also seems low enough for an N/A motor and a 160* tends to be better for FI.

lol you dont know what a bb is they are little bullets you use in like pellet guns and such they are very little they are like .177 caliber i think but when you take apart the stock t stat there is a hole where the metal pole goes into you just have to put a spacer in there and that is all it takes to lower your temps

Hey guys, I just did redaddiction's BB mod and it really works! The BB fit in the hole perfect. The hard part was disassembling and reassembling the thermostat. It took about 5 minutes to do each. Also I reused the gasket, I hope this is ok. Also I reinstalled the stat and let the truck idle and was shocked when I checked the gauge and it was at like 240! I had to press the gas and hold it at about 2500 RPM for a few seconds to pump coolant into the engine since it all drains out when you take the stat off. Then I turned the truck off and topped off the coolant again. I then uploaded the HPP3 160* 93 octane tune. The gauge reads at the bold mark between the 160 and 210 marks. Before it would run just in front of the 210 mark. You will need about a gallon of coolant and a gallon of water to top it off after doing this. Everybody should do this, it is so easy.

It was one of the best "Free mods" I have done... It works great, and my engine always stays very cool. On the highway doin 90+ it will warm up quite a bit, but it cools back down very quickly once you drop your speed.
I would also highly reccomend everyone doing this mod. The assembly/disassembly is the hardest part; it took me a vice, a friend, and myself to get it back together correctly. Be sure to grab more than 1 BB, because if you have my luck the one you bring will get lost very easily!
