Is your truck 2WD? Even if it isn't I would not stick anything but a 4L80-E in there.
Cost it out:
-got my 2000-model 80 off EBay for $685+115SH with TC and dipstick.
-put a $180 B&M pan on it.
-replaced the separator plate with TransGo's plate for $20
-installed a TransGo shift kit for $120
-installed a Level10 PTS rebuild kit for $525
-installed a Sonnax line adapter for $45
-2.5" square tube and angle steel for crossmember was $55
-replaced bad forward input drum $100
-upgraded to 2001 design OD roller clutch $485
-Installed TCI transmission controller $670
-fluid about $50
I rebuilt the trans and fabricated the crossmember myself - $0
The entire project ran me about $3K. Worth every penny. You won't even need the $700 controller - your stock PCM can run it with an inexpensive harness adpater and some programming.
DO IT!

, the thing is holding up great, gets a posi everytime. the only complaint is if i try and do anything fun with it other than strait line it unhooks and turns into a one wheel wonder. cookies are fun and i miss them

Lance, what are you gonna do? Buy a differant trans? Upgrade? Running all power do you need to go to the 80?
