Default Sending the 408 off to rehab...

...to cure it's drinking and smoking problems.

Decided to pull the 408 and ship it off to Rex and Richard at WCCH to cure the oil burning issues I've been having. I have faith that this time it will be done right, since someone else is choosing the parts

Apparently Diamond's oil return holes are smaller than they used to be, and Richard has seen motors burn oil until the holes are drilled larger, then the issues stop. Rex is going to be replacing the pistons with something different (probably Wiseco), and I'll be getting a set of WCCH 317 heads to go along with it. Gapless top rings will go away, replaced with a set of Ackerly & Childs plasma moly rings IIRC. Also going to go with a cam in the 218/224 range.

Motor comes out tonight and should be on a pallet headed towards Cali either tomorrow or Thursday.

Good luck, I had to finally bite the bullet and do it right too, I have faith Richard and Rex will get both our motors lined out. It seems the main problem with mine was the cylinders were out of round, could possibly be a problem with yours. Im just glad it wasnt my motor building skills that caused all my problems

Out of round? Yikes! Was it a high mileage core you used? Was it bored without a torque plate or something?

It was bored and honed with torque plates but he took it to a local shop to have it honed to knock the glaze off and thats where the issues might have happend.

Good luck man! I like the cam choice over what you had.

According to Richard the main problem was the skirt design of the JE pistons that egg shaped the cylinders where the skirts rubbed the cylinder walls. They were out of round by 2 thousandths.

I am exspecting to recive my engine tomorrow or thursday that they put together for me. I have a 218/224 562I 567E 112LSA cam in mine with the same rings you mentioned. I don't know if you have delt with Rex or Richard before, but they are great! Rex alaways answers the phone and all you questions. I couldn't have asked for better customer service from either of them. I am sure they straighten things out for ya!
