Hey guys, this is the first engine I'll be building from scratch as a short block (lq9). I'm trying to find the best rotating assembly and am wondering if there is a kit that is just the best of the best, or if I would be better off getting a crankshaft from one company, pistons from another, etc. and piecing together everything but by bit? I know I want a forged assembly, but other than that I am still trying to figure everything out. Any help would be much appreciated!

 

Texas speed sells complete kits with almost any brand pf parts you choose and they can balance it for you as well. I would start there.

You asked for the best of the best. So I believe you are shopping at the wrong place.

But in all honesty, the short block isn't the limiting factor when it comes to power using a stock block. Ask me how I know.....

 

Are you saying I should stay away from TSP? I probably won't be buying a kit from them. Even if it does end up being slightly more expensive, I'll most likely end up piecing together my own bottom end. The top end is what I'm having trouble really deciding on now.. haha

 

What are your goals? We can certainly help with that.

I think TX speed is a reputable company and I would have no problem ordering from them.

 

I haven't decided if I'm going to run 35 or 37" tires (leaning heavily towards 37's), but this engine is going in a 4x4 pre-runner. I'm going to bore it out to a 408 and want to turbo it. Beyond that I want to see a minimum of 500 rwhp/ft. Lbs. (the more the merrier however). I know that's a tall order on such big tires, but that's my goal. It's going to be used almost exclusively for offroad.

I plan on running wither 4.88 or 5.13 gears if that makes any difference.

 

I was just saying if you want the best of the best the crankshaft alone will cost more than the short block that you need. I'm talking billet center counterweighted bad mother ****** probably over 2000 just for the crank.

I have no opinion about TX speed other than it was contradictory to what you were asking.

Cylinder head flexing is typically the first issue that pops up. You'll push the head gaskets out of it before you make enough power to break anything in the bottom end.


....although, those crazy aussie ******* are pushing a ton of boost into these things using that special head gasket. Enough so that my above comments could likely be wrong. I just don't have experience with them personally and internet tales make fools chase tails.

 

What's the story on head gasket they are using?
