Most likely you won't have a problem. May sound like a sewing machine, may not. Just make sure your preload is rite and you will be fine. LSX type motors have some valvetrain noise, its just its nature.
I would definately get some better pushrods, those stock ones are weak. Get a good set of hardened ones since you are changing springs.

I vote for the lifters! Before you sell the farm though, there is an oil additive that will pump lifters back up. While working on my dad's fleet I came across lifters that were collapsed. The truck wouldn't pass emissions, it ticked and ran like poop. I put the oil additive and it was all good. It was a long time ago and I can't remember the name of it for the life of me. I think all it really did was thicken the oil. It's a temporary fix that could buy you some time until you can get in there and change the lifters.

For budget reasons, I'm staying with the stock rockers and pushrods. What's the likelihood that I'll have similar issues with valvetrain noise?
You should be ok if you use the stock pushrods and shaved .005" heads because you usually want to get a little longer pushrod with a bigger cam.

Thunder, I would try some 10w40 oil with lucas to see if it will quieten the lifter. If you dont notice a change, it might not be the lifter. If you're positive it isnt springs or rockers, it would almost have to be.

OK thanks guys I will do that. I don't think there's much point to fixing anything in the 5.3 since I am hopefully within a month or two of pulling it out and being done with it, so I will try the thicker oil or the oil additive. Hopefully that will solve the problem. I guess I will add a new set of lifters to the list of parts for the new motor though. Are there better ones out there or would I be just as well off with another set of stockers?
