Cool Removing Cats with STS

OK I am thinking about removing my cats and putting in a muffler. I would like it to be a little quieter with the cats removed and the muffler added than it is with the cats installed and no muffler. Does anyone think that this is possible? Also should I put the muffler before or after the turbo?

If I put the muffler after the turbo I think I will have to ditch the spare tire and I would rather not do that. I suppose I might be able to find a way to mount the spare in the bed but it will be in the way. I am thinking about using a Magnaflow # 12590 or # 14590 which is 3" dual in/ 3" out in a 22" long 5x11 case.

Thanks

I have a straight thru muffler in front of the turbo. It is pretty loud though. I am gonna look into a corvette muffler that enters and exits on the same side.

I have an oval 3" borla mounted behind the turbo and no cats.
Its turned at an angle and I still have the spare tire. Its a tight fit, but a round straight through muffler might fit better. If you add the muffler and remove the cats the sound should be only a little quieter if you already had a tail pipe ran out the back.

Cool

I already have a tail pipe that I had custom made at a local shop so I would prefer to put the muffler before the turbo and leave the tail pipe as it is.

Thanks guys. Anyone else ?

I was going to just put the dynatech vortex cones in each pipe after or before the gutted cats. One on both sides. I dont know anyone who tryed this, but it is not suppost to be restrictive at all (so they say) Summit part #dtc-72-32520 this is a 3 inch cone, I wonder if they have a 2 1/2. I ended up just putting a muffler on after the turbo and it helped alot. It took that poping sound out of it. At idle it sounds like a truck with a flowmaster, but when in boost it gets louder. But no where near as lound as with the cats gutted alone. I used the dynotech split flow, it is 6 inches long, straight through design, and only 5 inches in diameter. 3 inch pipe size. I am happy with it though. Plan B is the vortex cones. I hope this help you.

Cool

I know I am really a little bit on my own on this but I sure appreciate your ideas and experiences. The Dynatec Vortex Insert Cones are 3" and up and would likely be too big for stock exhaust. Maybe some bullets in place of the cats followed by a muffler.

Thanks again.

I just cut my cats off last night and damm its LOUD!!!
I was thinking of using one of these to make it a little more acceptable at freeway speeds.

It seems to have helped turbo spool up but now it smells like raw gas and crackles and pops like crazy when you let off under full throttle.
What do you think about using this resonator behind the turbo??

Cool

Is 4" the diameter of the resonator? What size is the inlet/exit? Turbo8 used a small Dynotech split flow that he says helped a bit and it is smaller than that resonator. I am not sure how much it would help. F8L had a magnalow behind his but I am not sure exactly which one he used or how quiet it made it. Probably a 14" case of some sort with 3" in/out and had a flange welded on it so he could remove it for racing.

Really loud with the cats off eh! Hmmm. Don't want it any louder if I can help it. Needs tuning too from the sound of it.

The inlet and outlet are 4". The diameter is probably around 8-9" since it says the thing is 10" long and 16.5" long from end to end. Just judging by eye anyways.

Yes my bitch is running very rich now!!
