Cuz the 5.3 PCV sucks air from the valve cover and takes an assload of oil with it. It spits all that oil into the intake. The LS6 Valley cover relocates where crankcase air is pulled from. Plus the LS6 cover has a better baffle in it. Essentially it cuts oil consumption down quite a bit.

Ok so what I have gotten from this so far is I should use an LQ4 with the 317 heads and some ARP studs, and an LS6 valley cover. Another thing I thought about today is that I want to be able to rev it up higher than the stock limiter is set at, so a new set of springs would be good too....are the LS6 springs the ones people usually go with?
Any advice on the rest of my questions?

I would get an LQ4, do some light porting on the heads. Put a nice SC grind cam in it and stick the 'ol Radix on it. I bet you'd get close to if not 500 at the wheels with a good tune. That'll get you a blown 60e and close to the 12's.

Either or. You cand and many use both. For the results I have seen from a few guys on LS1's I changed the cover on my enw motor. The cover is 44 bucks.
