Default Rear End Help ASAP

The rear end is gone and I need a new one because the truck will not move. The driveshaft just keeps spinning. I found this Eaton Posi and I wanted to purchase it, but make sure that it is the right one. Here is the link, can you guys tell me if this is the right one because it doesn't say that it will work for a newer chevy 1500. I think it is a 10 bolt 8.5 30 spline unit. Is this correct? I just dont want to but the rear end. Could the actual gears be messed up as well, or it usually the posi? It had a g80 and prior to going out, when making turns, it would hop and skip which leads me to believe that it is the posi unit and not the actual gears. I must admit, I don't know jack about rearends, so all help and feedback will be greatly appreciated.

You need to figure out what failed first as it is most likely a spider gear or a axle. It would have made some horrible noises if the ring gear failed or pinion snapped. Check this first then decide on a plan of action. Since you drag I would suggest you swap in a GM 9.5 inch 14 bolt semi floater with 6 lug pattern as it would "bilt in" and be a lot stronger than current axle assembly.

yes it made a loud noise, like a pop. I hope it is not the axles, that would be horrible. When I put it in gear it makes a grinding noise, but it is not real loud. The truck does not move at all. Should I tow it from the rear to prevent further damage and is there anything else I should replace while the rear end is apart? Thanks again.

Snoman, that is probably a good idea, but don't know how practical it is for me since I run about once a month and of course, on a limited budget. What do you think it would cost to do something like that? I plan on spending about 7 or 8 hundred on the rear end now. Don't want it to get too more expensive.

Thanks again, I really appreciate your guys is help.

The grinding noise is not good. I would tow it home rear end in air if you plan to try to fix it but you could also jack it up, pull cover and remove differentail gear cross pin, remove gears from it and put pin back in (you must as it keeps c clips seated that hold axles in) and the will disengage axles from diff and let you tow it home (or drive it home with front axle if 4x4 with rear shaft removed) A swap to a bone yard 9.5 would cost a lot less than 800 if your do the work and you should be able to find one with the ratio you have or want to change to. Also while 10 bolts can work, they are overstressed a bit is a fullsized truck and it is the smallest ring gear anyone uses in a fullsized pickup from Detroit. THe 9.5 is pretty bullet proof for this use by comparision.

Yep same rear end, they just changed the spec slightly in 89 with a slightly larger axle diameter and it still the same axle assembly. In my opinion, GM should have scaped the 10 bolt in big pickups long ago and made the 9.5 standard.
