Default questions from a future owner!

Soon im going to purchase either a 4.8 or 5.3, 2000 to 2001 silverado.

1. How much slower is the 4.8 than the 5.3 stock for stock?

2. Most of you dont have tonneau covers so i was wondering where you mounted you n2o bottles at?

3. I have a compucar dry-system, bag kit...would this be alright to use on my silverado with a 100-shot?

4. What are the average times of the 4.8 and the 5.3 in the quarter?

Thanks, I appreciate it.

Welcome to the board...

1. How much slower is the 4.8 than the 5.3 stock for stock?

Stock to stock it depends on what year. Some of these 02's are making a little more than advertised. My friend's SCSB 5.3L dynoed 4-6 peak rwhp than mine and ran 14.880 bone stock manually shifting at 5800. It would be safe to say the 4.8 is about .5 sec slower and traps 5-6 mph less.

2. Most of you dont have tonneau covers so i was wondering where you mounted you n2o bottles at?

I have both mine behind the seats. They fit with no problem or sacrifice...well at least for me

3. I have a compucar dry-system, bag kit...would this be alright to use on my silverado with a 100-shot?

The compucar shold suffice...The new generation silverados can run both MAF compensating (like yours) or fuel pressure boosting.

4. What are the average times of the 4.8 and the 5.3 in the quarter?

These again vary from year to year and by model:
(Approximations for SCSB 2wd)
99' 4.8L 16.5-17.0
99' 5.3L 15.9-16.0

00' 4.8L nearly the same as 01'
00' 5.3L nearly the same as 01'
01' 4.8L 16.0-16.2
01' 5.3L 15.3-15.5

02' 4.8L 15.8-16.1
02' 5.3L 14.9-15.4

What did they change for 02 that makes them faster? And did you hear that later this year they are coming out with an aluminum block 5.3 for the 03 SSR Pickup and it might be in the full size but I am not sure, it is also rumored that the aluminum 5.3 might be an option for the LWB Trailblazer.

I do not mean to offend anyone by posting this but like a very well known and respected member said:
quote:
We come together here to share information regarding or vehicles both good and bad and sometimes just to shoot the **** with fellow like minded people or at least those with a common intrest in automobiles

StreetSweepa, I do not want to discurage in buying a GM truck. In my opinion these trucks are superior to their competitors. However, I must let you know many of the 99+ trucks have knocking engines. Some member in this forum swer they have never heard or sean a knocking engine on these trucks. I have yet to hear one that does not knock. Some knock when you start them up cold, other after they reach normal operating temperature and does not go away(like mine). You may want to check out these sites before making a decision. http://www.angelfire.com/tx5/gmpistonslap/index.html

I would really recomend you ask other owners about this issuew and how GM is handling it. Another thing you might want to is call your local GM truck dealer service dept and pretend you have a have truck with this problem and ask them how common is problem (condition by GM).

Mine taps on the right side but it gets quieter when it warms up. I don't use any more oil than normal (never have to add any to stay at the top hole in the stick) I don't know if it is a piston or a valve or what but it does not worry me at all. Just start the truck up before you buy it and make sure there are not abnormal sounds.

There is much information (not-necessarilly substatiated nor factual but definately an abundance) regarding the whole "piston slap ordeal." Search the archives (here or on other related boards) and see for yourself the scope of this problem. Be objective and take the information for what it is, in most cases just opinions. Come to your own conclusions and speak to some owners/enthusiasts/GM reps yourself.

Me and really slow truck (Bryan) have the piston slap goin on pretty bad in our trucks. On cold start up and warm idle . GM gave me a 100,000/8 yr warranty for the pistons, piston rings, cylinder walls, etc.
Some dealers are denying a fix, some say there is one coming "soon". For now I just live with this annoying problem and hope i can throw a rod so they can swap me out a 6.0 ... I WISH!
I would def. go for a Chevy, but the new Dodge SRT10's w/ AT LEAST 500HP sound pretty nice...

I own a 01' Yukon 5.3 and I don't have a knocking problem, detonation problem, pinging problem, or piston slap. In fact four people here in Hawaii that I know who own a 99+ 4.8, 5.3, or 6.0 have never complained about piston slap. We may be lucky but I don't think so. The only problem that I have is a slight buzzing sound from the dash when I hit around 1,000 rpm's. I will take the cluster off and look around one of these days. I don't doubt that piston slap and knocking exists, but not in my Yukon. Just my .02.
