I need to know what was the first year for the 8.1 496 engine.. Do these engines use the same block and internals as the earlier 454 or is it a complety different one. Do they just have the new style heads and fuel injection.. reason is my dad and me are looking at a pair for this 32 fountain we are getting, it needs engines.. So if ya can tell me any info on these it would certainly help me out.. Thanks JOHN

 

01' is the first year for the 8.1L. They are very different but share some parts. The block is a 10.2 deck. The crank is different but the rod journals are the same, the rods are longer. My advice is to stay with the old BB their's not much aftermarket support for the 8.1L.

 

Yah I think so about the old school bb's, but I can get a hell of a deal on a pair of the new gens.. Thanks much that answered my ??

Is it a carb, or EFI setup?

 

It did have blown 596's big blocks in it. He bought a cat and is putting the engines that was in it in the cat. So i am looking into the new gen efi big blocks, since I can get a good deal on them we might eventually put whipples on them, I am at work but will post a few up when I get home...

 

how big is the cat? Are yall in a racing?

 

I am not sure the size on the cat, but I think it is a spectra or elim..Pops and me are going to ohio to get this hog. We have been into hotrod boats forever, na don't race pro, just love fast on the h2o. Here are a few pic's man
