Default Question about the 4.8

I am thinking of trading in the SS and getting a truck. I want to get a Reg cab SWB. Right now the only truck I found that I would remotely consider buying is a 4.8. In the future I want to build up the engine. I am unsure whether or not I will be getting a new block. Would it be "economical" to go ahead and get the 4.8 instead of dropping the extra money for the 5.3? How does the 4.8 differ from the 5.3 besides the bore? Is the stroke different? Can I reuse the crank from the 4.8 or 5.3 if I were to go to the 6 liter block? Sorry for all of the questions. Thanks.

If you think you might modify the motor in the future I would just get the 4.8L. You can get a complete 6.0L longblock pretty cheap and it should go in with minimal fuss. Then just sell or keep the 4.8L for a backup.

Is the truck your looking at new or used?

I looked at quite a few trucks and finally found a used one that was exactly what I wanted.

www.getauto.com is a very good place to search for a used vehicle.

2001ss get what you want the cranks are interchangeable betwee n the 4.8 and the 5.3. The way to go is drop in an ls1. you can buy the blocks for half of the cast iron you will lose 65lbs off the front. and you can make good hp on motor. Then put a big shot and run low 12's if traction permitting high 11's

The stroke is different on the 4.8L. The rest of the GENIII engines share the same stroke, right?

The stroke is the only thing different between the 4.8 and 5.3? I thought the bore was different. Can someone please back up either statement? Thanks.

According to my manual here

4.8 bore and stroke 3.779 x 3.268

5.3 bore and stroke 3.779 x 3.622

6.0 bore and stroke 4.001 x 3.622

BTW there is supposed to be an aluminum block 5.3 coming out in the SSR in a couple months or so.
