Yes, this can be done pretty easily. Clean up of coolant and bolt holes isnt fun, but its do-able.

It's kind of funny as often as I work on and rebuild motors I still make a mess

pull valve covers, remove rockers, remove pushrods, remove 15 or 16 bolts and lift head straight off. you may have to unbolt the transmission from the crossmember and lean the motor forward so you can get the drivers side head to clear the firewall.

wetvac the cylinders out and coat the cylinders to prevent rust.

If you have a higher mileage motor and aren't too confident that the cradles will keep the lifters held up with the cam out you might want to buy or make your own little tools to make sure the lifters stay in place so you don't have one fall into the oil pan because this will **** you off indefinately.

Normally the idea is to spin the cam over a few times with the pushrods and rocker arms removed and it pushes the lifters into the cradle that holds them there but with a higher mileage motor their is always the possibility that a couple of them could fall out and then you will be pulling the oil pan.
