Default Programmers

OK...I know from reading on this forum that a Nelson tune or just about any custom tuned pcm will give you the best performance. However, I mainly just want to change my shift points and be able to change my rear end gear ratio when I go to 4.10's. My question is if I go with Hypertech or another programmer how likely am I to experience detonation. I will be running 91-93 octane depending on what is available and want to keep my factory thermostat in. I'm just basically looking to see what the most reliable progammer is.

Hypertech is a good base programmer, I was very pleased with it. If all you want are to raise shift points and correct the speedo for different gears or tire sizes, it'll work just fine.

Default Diablo tuner

I have a Diablo tuner that I use on my 6.0, auto., HD. I'm very happy with the tranny adjustments it allows, not only can you change shift points based on RPM'S and MPH, but you can change shift pressure and quickness. The Diablo program only works on the tranny in the Tow-mode. It has a multitude of engine tweaks and also allows you to recalibrate your speedo for larger tires or different gears.
As I said I'm happy with the tranny adjustments but I would like some advice on where to tweak the engine settings for best performance. I'm looking for towing power. Any advice or recommended settings.

Even if all you want is to change shift points, speed limiter, speedo calibration, etc, if you have access to a laptop computer you are better off buying HPtuners software. Without a laptop, I guess there is a price difference, but if you have one, it is insane to pay 3 to 5 hundred for a handheld, when the same money can get you full tuning functionality.

depending on which hand held programmer you buy you can spend maybe 50$ more and get a nelson with free upgrades if you ever change your mind and talk to the guy that does the tune and everything some one who knows what there doing.... no offense i dont know how to tune something either that is why i am having someone tune mine not buying a hand held the little extra now saves you a lot more down the road and gives you even more for your money now J.M.O i could be wrong

For what you are looking for a programmer would be more than fine. I had a Hypertech before the HPT and was extremely happy with it ( for what it would do ).
If there is any chance you would go to custom tuning later then definitely spend the extra $$$$ now on Nelson, LS1Edit, HPTuners, etc.

Im going to get a Nelson tune sometime after the first of the year. You know this time of the year. And besides, My daughter comes first this time of year. Dads toys have to wait. I still like my Superchips tho. But you get more from a custom tune.
