Angry Problems with tranny fluid and filter swap

Trying to save a few dollars and do it myself, got the freakin pan off, replaced the filter and gasket, filled fluid back to orignal level, now my tranny is slipping in all gears. What could be the problem?? Anyone ever experienced this, i do remember one of two connections at the back of the open tranny disconnecting, could this of been the problem, i conncted it back of course. Anyone experienced this before?

there may be a good chance that you didn't get the filter properly seated in position and the gasket is leaking trans fluid back into the pan and not going into the trans itself.

Check to see that you did'nt overfill it. Even a little bit will cause it to slip. It should be just above the first dot when warm. That leaves room for expansion when it gets really hot. This is from a 20yr GM tranny tech......

Yeah that ******' drain plug won't move unless you have air tools too. I'd just drain the fluid and that's it...that "filter" is just a screen to keep the metal filings out of the valve body

Did you put Synthetic fluid back in it?

Yeah even with an impact wrench that plug didnt move, it just stripped it. I thought if u put synthetic fluid it would make the clutches slip, i put what gm recommends in the truck manual.

Yeah syn makes it too slippery that's why I asked.

Did you pull the old O-ring from the trans case when swapping filters?

Oh yeah, the impact wrench from hell was used to tighten that drain plug. How they got it that tight being made of that soft a$$ metal is beyond me.

Mike - I beg to differ about the overfull slipping deal. I do know that it will keep people off your rear bumper when you go WOT though. When I put the transgo in my Camaro I really overfilled the trans bad(on accident ) and drove it like that for at least a day until I noticed the white smoke out the back of the car at WOT. Turns out tranny fluid was blowing out the overflow vent and all over EVERYTHING under the car. I drained at least an extra quart out of there but, didn't have any slipping problems, maybe because the transgo shift kit?? Good experience but, I'll NEVER do that again.

Ya, could have been the shift kit. Dan the man says the stock ones will slip when overfilled a bit. He says he gets quite a bit of that at the shop, he just pumps out some fluid and they are fine. My '98 slipped with about 1/2 qt too much. It was stock though. You really need to get it warmed up enough to get a good read on that dipstick...
