Default Please help choose a cam for my application…

Hey, guys I'm in the market for a cam for my '99 GMC Sierra. Help me decide on a nice cam for my mods. Cam is going into a 5.3 RCSB with the following...

*TNT F1 Nitrous kit
*Built 4l65 w/ 3400 PI converter
*Custom HP-Tunning
*ASP UD Pulley
*LS1 efans
*UPD intake
*MSD wires w/ TR6s
*Thorley headers
*Cutouts
*4.10 gears

I don’t know much about cams, but this is one grind I came up with after searching info in the forums.

XER 222/224 .581 .581 114+ 4º.

What do you guys think? Btw, the truck will be sprayed with a 100 shot every once in a while for a little extra oomph, it will run N/A most of the time.

Like I said, I don’t know too much about cams, but this why I came up with this grind...

222/224 Duration: 5.3s seem to work very well with grinds between 220 and 224 degrees of duration. I chose a split design cam because it will help the exhaust fumes to exit the motor when I hit the bottle. I went with just 2º more of exhaust duration since it’s only a small shot plus I’m running LTs and cutouts.

.581 Lift: I chose the XER lobes because of the high lift and aggressive ramp which will help produce more HP and TQ (although I read somewhere that nitroused motors shouldn’t run too high lifts in the exhaust). Can anyone verify this? If so maybe a XER/XE 222/224 .581 .568 114 would be better?

114+4 LSA: This will help to reduce overlap, decrease scavenging, and keeps more nitrous in the cylinder after the intake charge than a narrower lsa cam. The 4º advance will help raise the DCR a few points also.

btw, I don’t know anything about valve events...

What do you guys think? Please school me if I'm wrong. Any suggestions or recommendations appreciated.

224/227 .569/.563 114 by thunder racing with a set of 918 spring and some hardened pushrods. You have the stall covered and the trans so this should suit you good.

With that converter and gears, you can go with a good bit more cam than that if you want. I know someone running a 226 226 with a 3000 converter in a 5.3, and its a great combo.

Hey thanks for the quick reply guys.

Thats the cam looks similar to the one I posted above, but with a little more duration and less lift. I bet it would work nicely.

I was thinking of getting the Patriot part #8401 (Partiot "Gold" .650" Lift Dual Spring Kit) LINK which includes: Patriot "Gold" Springs, Titanium Retainers, Machined bases, Super 7 Locks, & Viton Rubber Seals for $255.50 (best deal I've found so far), but don't really know which brand springs are best.

How high would I rev the engine with that cam or the TR224/227 on a 114? O forgot to post this on the 1st post, but I don't want to spin her over 6600 rpms since I'll be running the stock rod bolts and she is 8 years old.

I keep my shift points around 62-6500 with my 223/226. The cam you posted will work fine with what youre planning, I was just stating that with those gears, and that much converter you can go with a bigger cam. Also if your lift is going to stay under .600, I wouldnt worry about dual springs. Im (as well as a lot of others) are using the comp 918's and having good sucess with them.

I think the cam you posted is perfect, the only thing I would do is go with a 112lsa for more lope... and there is plenty of people running cams with 112lsa and spraying and they have had no issues.... I really wouldnt go over a 224/224 cam... but thats just me...
