Default parish, got a few tranny questions for ya

hey, i'm sure you've already posted this but i wanted to make sure. when you put the 80 in your truck, did you run into any width problems? like it fitting between the stock exhaust and what-not. also, did the speedo thing hook right up to it from the stock tranny. and the stock shift link lines hooked up correctly right. i saw a nice article about the 80 in the new super chevy and how it's programable with TCI's program and it's pretty interesting. and if you have a listing of what's needed for the swap then it might be a little easier way for some of us to handle the power we're going to be making soon.

you dont need the tci controler, speartech can set you up with what you need electricaly and they will need to reprogram you pcm, that cost $150. i got some 2500 lines and they fit better than the 1500 ones would have, they were $40 for the pair.

i used the stock y pipe. i welded an extention on the back of the cross member cause the mount was farther back. had to change the drive shaft lengths. the shfter linkage worked fine and didn't even need adjusted. you will need a crank shaft extention and i think a 4l80 flex plate.

sounds like alot but it was prety easy and this tranny is sweet, it shifts soft and smooth at part throttle and at WOT it shifts quick without that nasty sliping feeling you get with the stock 60, i need to put a shift kit in there and that will probably mess up the nice shifts but it is suppose to make it stronger.

The transmission is wider, but your exhaust will probably fit.I bought factory cooler lines at the dealer.DON'T use the TCI computer,Speartech does a conversion harness and programing for your PCM.You'll need to modify your crossmember, the 4L80E is only slightly longer but the mount on the 2wd version is almost 6" further back and the mount needs to be raised about 2" higher. The 2wd driveshaft worked by replacing the Yoke for the one used on a TH400 and a special u-joint with 2 different size ends. You need a crank spacer,4L80E flywheel and longer flywheel bolts.I also used the transmission mount from a 01 HD.

parish, what did you do for the drive shaft? have one custom made, or like a denny's nitrous shaft or something? and does someone sell a crank spacer for our motors, i've never heard anything about that part??? thanks for the info.

you can get the crank spacer at any dealer, it is a standard part on any 2500 with a 6.0. i just had my shafts modified, it was something like $150 to get one longer and one shorter and 4 new ujoints

The nuetral position switch and it's mounting bracket are different and available through the dealer. The switch was a dealer item but the bracket had to be ordered.Check to see if your transmission allready has the switch mounted on it.

The nuetral position switch is located on a bracket to the rear of the shift linkage on the driver side of the transmission. If you buy a used transmission like Parish did it may be on the transmission[his was].If you buy a built transmission like I did, you'll be hunting the bracket and switch. The switch makes the position indicator on the dash show the proper gear 123DNP it also works your backup lights.

but the switch from the 60 wont work with the 80 i'm taking it? another thing.....how much stronger is a stock 80 versus a stock 60? i know their fully built potential, but not sure about stock capability.

Most builders tell me a good stock transmission will handle 700+hp and the torque of a 502 big block.A stock 4L80E is supposed to be stronger than almost any built 4L60E.
