Default paging agreif- Eaton Q's

hey andrew,

how many shims did you add to each side of the carrier? also, how did you get the carrier bearings on, did you use a press, or a vice, or something else? i haven't done the install yet. i am just preparing myself for it in advance. still need to go to the store for some tools. also, did you use loctite on any of the bolts? what did you use for a gasket? silicone? i plan on doing this over the holidays. i have 2 weeks off. plus i want to get this done ASAP because i am having a hell of a time with traction right now with all the snow and ice

The amount of shims depends on whre you get the perfect contact pattern.
This might help you.

And yes, the bearings do have to be pressed.

Yeah, it depends on your carrier and housing. Best thing would be to order the adjustable shim set when you order the eaton. mine was different than the stock shims so I would have been SOL had I not gotten those.

also, how did you get the carrier bearings on, did you use a press, or a vice, or something else?
Yeah hyd press would be the way to do it. I took it to a place to do that. They actually just heated it in an oven and dropped it on. So you may want to try that before you take it somewhere, save yourself a little cash.

also, did you use loctite on any of the bolts? what did you use for a gasket? silicone?
Only put locktite on the pinion shaft bolt. Ring gear and diff cover bolts do NOT take locktite. Gasket - GM gasket, NO RTV! Just clean the surfaces (housing and cover) and put the gasket on and tighten down to specs.

Yeah, I know what you are talking about, got bogged down last week with some work, I'll try and get to that Eaton article here before the holidays.

Andrew

Here is the place that I got it, best price and great service!

I went to a great Tranny shop in Greenville, NY-1/2 hour south of Albany. I pm'd you about it. Thats if you want to go that route, Doing stuff yourself is a great feeling but when it came to the rear end on my Truck I swallowed my pride and had it done.
They installed my gears and eaton posi with no problems at all. Well worth the drive. I'm approx 1.5 hours north of them and have not had to go back, no noise, etc.

got the adjustable shim kit already. the only thing i pretty much need to get done is the pressing of the bearrings on to the carrier. i might try that oven deal. when i took a physics class in college, the teacher had a metal ring, and a round object that would not fit through the ring. then he heated the ring and the round object was able to fit through. so i am thinking that the same thing will work for me. if i put the carrier bearings in the oven, take them out after a few minutes, they should slide over the carrier hubs. anyone else think i can do this?

Yeah, I think that should work, just crank the oven up and put it in there for 20-25 mins and then put it on. should just slide right on. Make sure to clean the mating surfaces good. If it doesn't work you can just get them pressed on.

thanks for the info creederado. i know someone near here that runs a tranny shop too. he put in my yank and said that he could do the posi too. but i want to learn myself and save a few bucks. i have been doing alot of research and i think i have it pretty much figured out. just trying to anticipate/avoid any problems that may arise. i think the only thing i need to decide on is what beer to buy for the install
