Original Prototype Silverado SS Motor
#1
Way back when, before there was a production nbs Silverado SS, there was a prototype with a 6.0 naturaly asperated engine that put out over 450 hp. Does anyone on the board know what this engine was, or what the internals were that gave it the output that it had?
I'd like to have an engine like that. Especially one that meets California emissions.

Here is a little info on it....
In keeping with the Corvette theme (and sharing of parts), the Silverado SS concept is powered by a modified 5.7-liter LS1 Corvette powerplant bored out to 6.6-liters and mated to a six-speed manual tranny. This engine is capable of 480 horsepower and 475 ft-lbs. of torque.

Been nice, but the tranny would be a problem. You would need a short throw shifter to be incorporated into the truck. ie:fully intergrated center console with shifter right at hand. A shifter going from the floorboard to midway up the dash is not a performance shifter.
As the new 04' and up Ford truck is set up. They have the automatic shifter in a great spot. They could incorporate a short throw six speed manual tranny into that spot.
As they will more than likely place it when the new Lightning comes out.
I tell you what, If GM doesn't step up to the plate with a better SS motor in the near future (a lot more HP and torque)........I may have to switch to Ford if they ever come out with the new Lightning that is supposedly going to have 500 HP and 550 FT LBs of TQ
.
Though I have faith in GM, so I'm hoping they will give us what we need, not what we want.

Ford's Lightning replacement will be the Explorer Sport-Trac with the supercharged 5.4 putting out about 400 horses.
But Chevy does need to step up to the plate to compete with the Dodge STR-10. But you know the idiots at GM's marketing feel that a hot rod truck will pull sales away from the Corvette.
Hello? You've got 2 completely different clienteles (sp). The truck guy needs a truck to move the boat or toy trailer (with Corvette) to and from happenings and can't afford a new Vette. Where as a Vette guy is either in hock up to his *** or can afford to buy the Vette and the truck and will pay cash for both.
I think it's only in the best interest of GM to make a hot-rod truck that can run past the SRT-10s and show the world who's boss.
BTW GM: If you do call another truck an SS, use something more than a warmed over truck engine with 45 hp hidden somewhere in the torque management.

Problem that will arise is when they ask themselves........"Will the tranny hold up before the warranty goes?" Answer: No, not unless it's redesigned and strengthened.
A corvette tranny will not due the deed behind a hefty truck. The Allison tranny will rob too many Horses. I guess too up the anti in the SS truck they will need a totally different tranny.
I'm sure these only a few problems they would encounter with a higher HP application motor.
There's also the EPA, fuel consumption, and so on to also consider.
Hope they figure something out though.
That Ford Lightning may be canned until 2008, but it's comming.
Maybe GM is just holding out until Ford debutes their new Lightning to be competitive or dominant. Lets just hope for the best!

The new 6L80 6 speed in the 2006 Cadillac should provide the transmission required for higer HP trucks. Far as I know, it will be available in trucks at some point (2007?).
I would imagine some persons on these message boards and some sponsers over there -----> on the right will get around to swapping one into a older model truck.....
