The STS kit is what youl want.... PM me with any questions you want... My truck is my only vehicle and I put 12k on her a year.

I'm with Green tahoe also on SOME of the mods, but LS1 fans can be dealt without until you find a steal on a price.. also, tires and traction is THE BIGGEST concern on a truck for low et's.

I'm going with a few mods to save me alot of $$$ ... as in the stall convertor, rear end and tranny.

Skip headers completely IMO... i see no reason to use them unless you have done all the other neccesary mods and your forced induction.

I know what boat you are floating in right now... I have done alot of performance mods to this truck semi-recently and have spent a ton less than alot of the others here, come to speak of it... I AM a college student afterall.

Okay, if I went with STS, how much would it cost to make the 4L60 bulletproof?

On the headers, many have recommended and one has said not to mess with it. I like bolt-on mods as long as they provide reasonable gains. Do long-tube headers provide the gains sufficient to warrant the cost? If so, what is the best brand?

As far as tuning, I've always been wary of tuning as I'm afraid the tuner might lean out the engine too much causing detonation and a blown motor. I know tuning is absolutely critical for forced induction, but for bolt-ons, I'd almost rather not mess with it and let the motor run a bit rich. Torque Management sucks, but I can live with it as long as it keeps my tranny together.

He said "bulletproof 4l60e". That jsut sounds funny. There is no real way to make that trans bullet proof. Your best bet would be to upgrade to a 4l65e. Trust me i know. Radix'd 4.8's trans history:
Stock 4l60e=
Built 4l60e#1=
Built 4l60e#2= almost and it only has like 1300 miles on it

Hands down, a nice cam/springs and tune to match will be the best bang for the buck unless you go FI. All the other mods, headers, fans, pulley, plugs, wires, re-tune, etc... will only compliment the performance of the cam. I would do cam/springs, headers, and tune all at the same time. Could be worth 40 to 50rw easy.

Can the stock tranny handle a cam and springs? I am kind of adverse to opening up the motor, but I know a decent sized cam and springs will still make for a reliable motor with a good tune.

LTNKLR01,
Yeah, I guess you're right. A 65 or 80 would be much better than trying to bandaid a 60. So, much for making this truck fast on a relatively 'small' budget.

Absolutly! You really don't have much to worry about until you get over 350 at the wheels. The 4l60 is weak in the truck anyway, so if you do any modding, it's only going to effect the tranny in your driving habits. If you do lots of flooring off the line through 2nd,your tranny won't last anyway. Just leave some of the TM in when you get a tune. My tranny lasted 70k before the rebuild, it saw nitrous, 6000#'s of summertime towing for 2 years and the track.Cam swaps in these truck are EASY btw. Takes about 4 hours at home for a cam and springs with the right tools.

I'm sure I could find several places/people to help me do a cam/springs here in DFW. Are Ti retainers recommended too?

How much power typically do long-tubes make on a stock motor? What are the best brands?
