i've wanted an M6 in my truck since day one....but lately it's getting worse. i know it's been done but it was by some professional fabricator with GM's money. SO.....what all would be involved if one of us wanted to do the swap, what parts would be needed, how hard would the actuall work be, and would we have to swap to an M6 computer from a vette/camaro/firebird???

contact Berger Chevrolet (yeah the people that use to do the special camaros). now that the camaros are gone they are doing LS6/6spd conversions into 1500 silverados.

lets look at what needs to be done.
bolt it to the motor, easy
figure out a crosmember, easy
hook up driveshaft, maybe change length, easy
plug in the speed sensor and see if the computer works, more research here, without some programing there would have to be a ses light but it might still work ok.
cut a hole in the floor and lenthen shifter, this would be easy if it comes thru the floor in a good spot, if it ends up to far forward or back it could be a major problem.
clutch, steal the pedals and clutch master and lines from a 4.8 stick and i bet it will work, have to get more info here too.
a look under a stick silverado and a 6sp camaro would answer the clutch and shifter location questions.

that is funny you want to do this i was thinking about it today. i absolutely hate the stock 4l60e. i think that it would not be too hard like parish said. also i know on the fbodies you can turn the shifting stuff off in the computer because that is what my buddy did when he swaped to a th350.
how much diff. are the comps??
Personaly i want a 4l80e with a man valve body and a trans brake. that would be sweet if it can be done. will see

yeah, i'd like the 4l80 with man body and tbrake, but the 6 speed is STRONG and fun to drive. i know they can handle tons of power in an fbody, but could they in a heavy truck?????

Must be something in the air, cuz I too was thinking about it today.
When my truck hits the warranty (2-3 more years or 100k) then I wanna put in a built 6L with T56. Go from runnning 15s to 11s in the 1/4. I agree, you should be able to swap over a clutch and pedal setup from a 4.8 or 4.3 manual truck those are plentiful). I would think you would need a 6spd Maro/T/A computer. B/c how else woudl the computer know that you have a 6spd now instead of an auto? LS1 Edit isnt that broad yet is it? But even that would be somewhat straight forward and easy to do. Like Jim said the hardest part would be to make sure the shifter comes through the floorboard at the right spot, cuz I'm not sure how you could change that, without running into alot of serious fabricating and modifying.
I wish I would have taken more pics of the single cab SS soncept at Power Tour. It had the T56 in it with a chrome shifter and everything. Totally sick!

The computer part is easy because it doesn't control anything on the 6 speed except maybe CAGS. I think you can just turn off all the auto transmission codes and be good to go.
Just ask the Fbody guys who have went to a 6spd or manual valve body auto. The computers are damn near identical so whatever they did would work and edit for the trucks has the power to do it.

Swapping in the tranny might be easier than launching that baby out of the hole.T56 has a low first gear and land speed record gears on top.Why not go for a 5 speed Richmond transmission and find a wreaked 4.8 5 speed to rob the computer, peddle setup and speed sensor.Go with a good high performance clutch setup too.
