oil starved dmax
#1
I posted this in gmdeisel.com a while back thought I'd pick some brains hereas well. Back in early feb i took the dmax to a place called " oil changers". I know I'm a dumbass. Anyway the monkey in the pit neglected to tighten the filter and the drain plug . Four days later i'm takin the kids to hockey and the check oil pressure light comes on . As I pull into the service station a noise like a belt breakin comes from under the hood ( turbo self destructing) I pop the hood and smoke is all over , not heavy but still smoke. No oil registers on the dipstick so I dump ten liters of oil into in and crawl underneath to see it running uot the plug so I tighten it finger tight and drive th 100k back home. The next morning I take it back to Oil Changers ad they acknowledge the lose plug and ask I take it to his mech wich I do. Pretty serious noises she's makin now and the mech concurs cus the bottom of the truck is covered in oil.
O.K . it is now a month later and there is a whole lot of details left out of the story. The dmax spun 2 rod bearings yet bent all push rods???????? None of the " experts " here can give me a reasonable explaination . A mech i Talked to today was talking about a hydraulic drive cam? can anyone educate me on the workings of the duramax? or give me an explaination how all pushrods could bend. The machine shop ordered cam bearings only to be told that they are none servicable? they ( the machine shop ) said they'd " fix " them . can anyone comment an that as well please.
my last question for now is in an oil starved engine is it feasable to replace four lifters and not the cam or the other lifters. and is it ok to replace two valve guides considering the bent pushrods.
the bottom line is i am entitled to the same condition engine as when they first changed the oil . does anyone believe that is what I am getting.
any input will be helpfull

I think they are trying to shaft you. It might be just me, but I would want someone that knows what the hell they are doing working on my truck. It sounds like the guys your taking it to don't know anything about the D-Max. I would take it to a dealer, and get them to look at it. Send the bill to the oil change place. I would demand a new engine. That thing sounds like it's toast.

Yeah they FUBAR'd that motor due to incompetance, get them to pay for a NEW motor. If it ran that long w/ little to no oil, that motor is gone...and that's sad. There's no way I forsee rebuilding/reman'ing that motor where to it will be like new or quality used.
Before doing anything silly, consult a local Lawyer on your rights...you may be SOL as you did leave their establishment and well I check my oil on each fuel fill up and would notice odd noises with low oil and if it were leaking that much oil you'd see it all over the ground or smoking by burning from under the truck.
Not trying to pop your bubble but I'm a realist and you maybe SOL due to ignorance on your end.

I still say stick to your guns and demand a new engine .. not repairing the current one.
If I were shop[ping for a used DMax, I wouldn't buy one that had been rebuilt cause it was run dry on oil ... period.

As a former shop owner I am sorry to say I have experience in this. We unknowingly put the wrong filter on a guys truck and he came back like 2 weeks later saying I ruined his engine. At first I was skeptical thinking he was just trying to scam me. After a little detective work I realized he was right and I was wrong. I gladly bent over backwards to please him, 'cause the last thing I wanted was a law suit. My insurance bought him a motor and he had it done at the place of his choice. I could have fixed it, but I didn't want there to be any question as to his satisfaction.
I suggest you talk to the shop owner and demand a new motor. No negotiations, no compromises. If he wont agree to that turn it over to an attorney. The shop has no leg to stand on. A d-max is a complicated and expensive motor and I would want the truck to be right. Just my .02

My oil changes cost me $44 at jiffy lube each time i take it there. I change my own oil every other oil change and then let them do it to lubricate the chassis. The one in Orange Park FL did mine one time about a year ago and didnt change the filter. They just drained the oil and refilled it. I knoticed it later that night when i was tinkering and took it back up there. Come to find out they were out of those filters and thought they would get away with it. Anyway, long story short we argued a little and i ended up with 4 free oil changes.
Dont settle for there BS, its total geglagence on their part. If you get a greedy lawyer like i would he would also account for the fact that you were taking your kids to hockey and engine failure could have easily caused a fatal accident. Good luck and stick to your guns

If you do find out your going to get shafted and you have to fork over the cash to replace your dmax, you could always sell my your cj! That might offset the price some!
