Default Oil level dummy light

i think that my oil level gauge that is the pan is stopped working. my truck is a stock 99 with a 5.3. i have never had any problems with it burning a lot of oil or anything like that and even recently it hasn't been leaving any spots anywhere. so the problem is that last night i got in it and the check oil level light was on. which is weird cause it has never come on before. so i check the oil and its low. so today i filled it back up and the light is still staying on.
so what i am wondering is has anyone else had their oil level gauge go out and is there anyway to make sure it is the gauge that is wrong? like a way to test it?

The only way that I could think to test it would be to pull it out of the pan and move the float with it plugged in to see if it registers the change on the DIC.

It's probable just stuck, If you know it has oil, just drive it around for a while, take it off some sweet jumps, and see if it doesn't go out.
