Well in the Z (and WRX) I run M1...change filter at 5K mi and add a Qt. Run to another 5K and change both. I use the cheapo parts store filters...Pep Boyz ones are reboxed Purolaters...

If I'm going dino, I go for Valvoline (whats in the Ford, no $5/qt oil as it leaks...damned rearmain seal!). I ran Val in the Z until I decided to go syn. I usually run the lightest oil I can for my needs... 5W30 seems to be it.

Now this sounds foolish but I can't remember which viscosity number of the two is for cold start vs operating temp.

The 1st number is the cold number, so that it doesnt get thick in the cold, the second number is the operating number once it gets hot. Hence the reason i run 0w-30 to avoid as much start up wear as possible. Its listed as an option in my 2000 owners manual, so its not like i'm even doing anything the factory doesnt already recommend.

Ah I gotcha, I couldn't remember. I used to run some 20W50 in the Ford due to that rear main leak and was losing MPG and power with such a heavy oil...back to the 5W30 and picked up ~.5-1 mpg more! hahaha

I think the main plug you will be encouraged to use is NGK.

Stock Replacement Plug:
-NGK TR5 ($2ea local auto store)
-NGK TR55-IX iridium plug (supposedly better than the platinum but cost $6-7ea.--may have to order)

If you ever add nitrous or anotehr type of power-adder, you would need to maybe get a step colder plug:
-NGK TR6 ($2)
-NGK TR6-IX ($6-7)

TR-55 is stock replacement, TR-5 would be a heat range hotter, whereas the TR-6 is a heat range colder.

The TR-5 is gapped at .035 while the TR-55 is gapped at .050. Both are stock heat range as far as I know. TR-6 Is a heat range cooler for built engines and SC/Turbo. These plugs are copper and they also have iridiums for longer life.

Well I just wanted to let everyone know that I went with the royal purple for the oil. I could see a mpg increase. They said it would do that. Plus I do not have to change it ever 3000 but every 6000. SWEET!!! Royal Purple Rocks!!! But it did cost double. OH well.

Default Oil filter size 99 6.0 vs. size for 04 5.3

I noticed the oil filter for my 04 5.3 is about 2/3s the length of the filter specified for my 99 6.0. The diameter & thread size are the same, anyone see a reason I should not use the longer filter, think it was a PF-59 or 3675 for the 99, can't remember the number for the new filter. Doesn't make sense to use a smaller filter if the bigger one fits??? More filtering capacity right? BTW, I've been using Mobile 1 5W-30 since 99, no problems & usually 4,500 -5000 miles between changes.

That was a production change they made just as a cost savings, you will have no prolems running the larger pf59/m1-206 filter.
