No Hypertech 160* T-stat for 05' SS or VHO?
#1
Just called Hypertech and they told me that there is no 160* T-stat for an 05' SS or VHO edition Silverados.
Is this true?? Where do I buy a 160* T-stat at here in Houston?

I was told that it was not necessary to run the 160 T-Stat and that the factory T-Stat is the ideal T-Stat as the motor was designed to run at the factory operating temp. I spoke to a few shops that do dyno tuning on LSx engines and was told that they have never seen power increases from running at 160 - 175 versus 195 - 205. They did report that they have actually seen these motors lose power from running to cool. I was also told that an engine running to cool would cause premature cyclinder wear.
With that being said, all of my previous Chevy's had 160 t-stats and they seemed to perform better at cooler temps. Anyone else have any info on this?
I was told by hypertech that they didn't have t-stat for any of the 05 Silverados not just the SS or VHO. I would like to know where I could order a 160 t-stat should someone have proof that what I was told about the t-stats is incorrect.

I too did some research on the 160* T-stats and found that the engines will still warm up to 175-185*. The 160* stat doesn't mean it will operate that cool. It just lowers the engine temps a bit.
The only way on the EFI engines you would get premature cylinder wall wear is if you notice a decrease in your fuel economy. Then that would tell you that your engine is not warming up and not going out of the warm-up loop.
At that point you would know that too much fuel is being sprayed into the cylinders and washing off the oil on the cylinder walls. Basically your engine would be running rich.
If that happens, then yes your engine would get premature engine cylinder and piston ring wear.
Basically then your performance shops theory may and may not be accurate.
Allen Nelson told me to run the 160* stat and I will be fine. He actually recommended it. He also said that the PCM goes out of the warm-up loop between 135*-145*.
Hope this helps.
