I know after swapping longtubes and no cats onto my truck, and after re-tweaking the tune, I cannot smell any raw gas/fume smell whatsoever.

I did notice it before re-tuning, and I actually expected to, but not anymore.

EVERY single other vehicle I have owned that had headers and the cats removed (which is a LOT), had that distinctive "rich" smell, specifically at idle,

BUT...every single other vehicle I have bothered to add headers and off road exhaust to, also had a bigger than stock camshaft in it as well. My truck has stock camshaft, stock injectors, stock maf meter, etc...which I can't help but think has to have something to do with it.

I'd do the cats as close to the factory location as possible, one on each bank...cats need to get warm to operate properly and work best as close to the collectors as possible...plus it seems to be the best use of space...

I think you could make those converters fit, a good exhaust shop could modify your y-pipe.
