Next mod? ASP pullies or Gibson shorty headers?

I'm going to get a little bonus from work and am thinking about getting either the ASP underdrive pullies which I've had before or some Gibson shorty headers. The pullies were OK but I expected a little more so I'm leaning toward the Gibson shorties. I know it's said the shorty headers don't make much of a difference but I can't afford the mid-length (Hamms, TOG, etc) at $550 plus. Truck Performance has the Gibson's on sale for $279, the pullies I can get for $199 from Tbyrne Motorsports. What you think?

Gibson's are a waist of money IMO. They won't give you much gains, and mine are rusted. I say, just save and get the headers you really want instead of something that are ok at best.

What gears did you have before the 4.10's? I'm not sure if going to 4.10's from 3.73's would be worth it. Of course, I could do the 4.10's and pullies for about $400! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" /> <img border="0" title="" alt="[Razz]" src="gr_images/icons/tongue.gif" />

I went from 3.42s to the 4.10s. I thought I would lose a lot on the top end but I actually trapped at a higher speed than with the 3.42's. It was like .2 of one mph but still that surprised me. I now get lots of wheel spin and wheel hop so my 60 still sucks bad (2.34), but I recommend 4.10s to anybody. Also it did not really affect gas mileage like I thought.

Also most people who go from 3.42 to 3.73 are not getting much gain for their money because that's only .31 lower, but 3.73 to 4.10 is .37 lower.

Gibson Shorties>>>>*OOOO - slight if any gains...still better than a TB spacer
ASP UDP>>>>>>>>***OO - Good value and consistant performance
4.10 Gears>>>>>>>***OO - Good for drivability and performance

It seems that you have tried 3 different brands of every bolt on out there. Dont get me wrong, its nice to see someone really trying to figure out which air filter makes the best power. You need to do something that will really wake up your truck. Do a cam. If you choose the right one, you will wake up your low end and gain some on the top end. At least with a cam swap you will know you have made some power gains that won't be measured in .00s.
Give one a shot, you will be glad you did.

How much is a cam and what is involved in changing one out? I wouldn't do it myself, I would have my mechanic do it but how many hours should I expect to get billed from him, roughly? Would I need new springs, etc?

There are at least 10 threads going around right now about cam specs, whats involved, parts needed, etc... Take a little time to research and find out whats involved. Pick one out that suits your needs, then go just a tad larger. If you make a good choice, it will be the best mod you have done. Expect 4-5 hours to change springs and install the cam.
For a cam install, you will need:
A cam
Valve springs
Front cover gasket
Front crank seal
Crank pulley bolt
New pushrods aren't needed. 2001 LS6 valve springs will work fine with low lift cams around .530 lift. Anything larger, and you might want to get some Comp springs.
Once you have a feel for what cam specs you would want, keep an eye out in the classifieds section. There have been lots of good truck spec cams that car guys have tried out, then removed for something larger. I found a Comp 212/218 there recently. I know several other guys have found good cams there too. If you buy one, don't just get one from a catalog, talk to a sponsor and have one custom ground. It will be just about the same price and you will get exactly what you are wanting out of it.
Email me if you have any more questions.
