Hey, im a new member and just wanted to say HI and ask a question.

My question is about a engine noise. It sounds like a whiring or whistling sound..it kinda sounds like the wind, but its not. I never noticed the sound in my step-dads new surburban and my friends truck and they have the same motor which is a 5.3. Mine is a 01 with just over 100,000 miles on it. I know I am perinoid but it keeps bothering me so I recored the sound. Its hard to hear so you will have to turn up the volume to hear it. You can hear the sound all the way through the first clip and at the beginning and end of the second clip.

I am currently enrolled in Auto Service Tech at a local technology school and I love it. I know some in this field but not everything, so if I ask to explain something please do not get angry, im just trying to learn more.

Thanks in advance for any help and I just want to say this site is freakin awesome and there are some badass trucks on here.

Welcome Adam. I have that same noise, I asked my friends father who is a tech he thought it to be the tranny(normal noise). So then I asked my auto tranny teacher and he thought it to be the same normal noise. My truck has 150,000mi on her so maybe just the trucks with more mileage. Not sure about anyone else though.

Welcome to the site!

I have the same noise in my truck... I've always thought it was the tranny or maybe an accessory whining. (I think mine's actually louder than the one in your vid there - maybe it was just the recording)

Mine seems to come in pretty loud just before the 1-2 shift for whatever reason.

It could be your power steering..Check the power steering fluid.

is it that humming sound?

could be the:

1. dash overlay
2. an amp
3. aftermarket spark plug wires

which of those do you have?

Thanks for all the replys guys...

Marc_w is this happening in the SS? I have a whining sound in mine as I go though the gears. You can hear it when I reved the engine in the second clip. The sound is a little different from the sound I was talkin about in my first post but I would like to know what it could be.

Its not the power steering fluid and I have an amp but thats not it. Its not the overlay either cause I can turn it off.

I think I just need to except that my eninge is goin to get a little noisy as I add the miles up.

I got a question about my tranny also...when I shift it takes a while to shift from 1-2, 2-3, 3-4..could this be tuning or is this just cause of the miles on the tranny.
