The problem with BDC is that I don't think I'll see the piston with just a fashlight and small mirror. I have borescopes at work but I doubt they'd let me borrow one. I'll bring it home and pull a head. I'll probably put in some forged pistons anyways. How much lift can I run on it with some flattops? I was thinking of a 224/581 lift on a 112.

if you're gonna go through the motor it doesnt really matter if its lq4 or lq9 does it? buy it up its a good deal!

if ya want to get your compression back slap some 5.3 or 5.7 heads on it and run a slightly thicker head gasket, could get back to 10:1 i suppose.

Your right. It doesn't really matter which one it is...a piston change and it's an LQ9. But pistons are expensive so I was almost hoping that I could use the pistons/rods/crank that are in there and the hi comp. ones are better. It'll be going into my 81Z so getting it installed and running are my first objectives. I'll rip it apart and have all the parts looked at and go from there....although once it's apart the pistons are right there so...

You could mill the heads and use stock gasket thickness and get rougly the same comp as an LQ9.

Ok if the pistons are good and I mill the heads .030, what is the max lift I can get away with? I will be using a carb and this will be going in an 81Z with 3000 stall and 4.10 gears. I don't want to spin it up much past 6500 to make power. There are a lot of cams out there but i'm not sure as to how much lift I can take.

I thought the LQ9 had better heads then the LQ4. The LQ9 head are similar to the LS6 heads.?

Same heads.

Milled .030 you should be able to handle the 224 .581 cam. You may have issues if you increase duration more and go higher lift though. People have to start cutting pistons with mid 230s duration an near .600 lift I think.

Thanks BigTex. I'd like to keep lift under .600 which will affect the amount of duration.
