Default New to chevy

Hello, i just bought my first chevy truck,03 silverado 1500 5.3L

Planning to go with heads cam, ls1edit (when carputing make it available for the 03 trucks), and maybe a procharger (if I can save enough cash <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" /> )
Would I need a high performance tranny?
Is there a way to make the tranny stronger without a complete rebuild?

In advance............Thanks for the help.

you are going to realize real quick that what you want to do is doing to require a loth of little things that are going to add up. you will need a built trany normaly around 2000$ the stock one will not hold up with all that. with a cam depending on the size you will need a stall might be able to get away with out one if you get a mild cam. converter new about 800$ used about 400$. you are going to have to do something with the fuel system definatly injecters not sure on cost believe around 200$ new. dont remember if you said what rearend you had but if itis a open differential you will need to up grade that around 300$ and up. if you truck is hooking up at all with the power you are going to be making with h/c and s/c the stock 10 bolt probably will not last long. at least it doesnt in f-bodies but they track alot better. new 12bolt or ford 9" about 2000$. if any body sees any thing i missed let him know and if any thing i said is wrong let him know.

Ryan has pretty much covered things. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />

A stall isn't necessary BUT, with the procharger and cam a nice stall would help ALOT assuming you can get traction. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />

Also, the trucks have a bigger 10 bolt then the f-body's so it should hold up to the abuse. If it doesn't I think I saw onetime about somebody who swapped the 10bolt for a rear from a HD truck.

Oh, and the big injectors that fit the trucks are $640+. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="gr_eek2.gif" /> <img border="0" title="" alt="[Sad]" src="gr_sad.gif" />

a shift kit and a cooler will help your tranny live for awhile with just a heads and cam set up or just a blower, it would help to monitor your tranz temp too. once you get both though your tranny doesn't have a chance.

you will spend alot on other items to suport the blower and heads and cam set up but no one says you have to do it all at once, the best thing about these trucks is all the options you have, there are at least 10 diferent places to get heads. probably 50 diferent grinds for a cam to choose from or make up your own. the posiable modifications seem to be endless.

one note on the injectors, if i were to do it again i would go strait for the 50lb/hr units that are made for an f body and make them work in your truck, they are cheaper and it sounds like you may need the flow someday. they don't just plug in like the ones made for the trucks but it sounds like it isn't too hard to make them work.

Yeah, everyone pretty much nailed it. Your only real limit is how deep the wallet is. You've got so many options w/ the Gen III. Power is easy to obtain with these motors. Its just how much are you willing to spend. And it can get excessive lol

i think the reason things seem to break so easialy is it is so easy to make alot of extra power with these engines.
