Default New Cam/Tune for 5.3L

Well, I didnt get the supercharger off of ebay, got outbid by a sniper...used Radix with intercooler went for 2400. Damn good deal, but oh well.

So, I called my local shop, and started talking about a cam and a custom tune. He told me any cam I want, new springs, pushrods, chain, labor, etc...and a custome tune for ~1700. Is that a fair price?

Next. What cam would all of you suggest? IM looking for more power obviosuly, but I also need respectable gas mileage. Right now I average around 16, and IM happy with that. I will most likely go with a new set of headers as well seems how the shorties seem to be the wrong way to have gone. So any advice on a cam I welcome. Thanks.

Well you and your friend is not a shop that has overhead, tool costs and employees. As for a shop doing it thats not to bad. Figure parts at almost 1k and tuning and labor for 1700 not to bad. Some may think thats high but if its done and done right its worth every penny.

LOL, just because they have tools and employees doesn't mean they know what the hell they're doing. I'm assuming you do this kinda work for a living so that's why you're saying $1700 isn't bad.

$1700 is RAPE, I don't care who you are. You can get the cam/springs/pushrods package for right around $600 brand new and there are plenty of shops who won't charge you $1100 for the cost of labor. Hell, there's a shop in Arlington that does cam/spring/pushrod installs for $350.

It's a 4-6 hour job for someone who knows what they're doing. So depending on labor costs (between $60-$100) it shouldn't cost over $500

Wow..Im completely in the dark about what is a good price. I have mechanical abilities, how hard is a cam to install? They guy told me that its 300 to go on the dyno and tune, so I imagine if I do the work myself Im only out 300.

While were argueing about price...whats a good cam?

I guess I am saying that it isn't tough to do at all and you can rent the special tools for cheap. Mine was done right and done right for cheap. There is no way in hell I would pay $1700 for a shop to do all that...

I guess I should clarify. The 1700 included 300 for the tune and dyno run. So I believe its more likely 13-1400 for the cam springs install etc...but I guess this is still high by your standards. This guy does know what hes doing. Here is his website. Some nice vids on a couple of cars he built as well as one damn fast truck...

A cam isn't tough at all to install. It seems daunting at first, but it is straight forward and pretty simple...just take your time. You do need a few special tools but you can rent them for cheap.

ok, im confident in my abilities to install the cam, I would assume they come with instructions...and if not I can find it online somewhere. So, because I am not a mechanic by trade:

What do I need?

Camshaft obviously, whats a good brand, reliable, lift duration etc...

I assume the springs would be valve springs? Any specific brand anyone recomends?

Will I need new lifters? If so, solid or hydraulic?

Will I need new valves and pushrods?

Anything else I need I welcome your suggestions. This is by far the best website I have found for chevrolet trucks and from the looks of your rides you all seem to know what the hell your doing...so I appreciate it.
