Default New build* lq4

Recently purchased a long block with about 170k on it, started up fine and sounded great. Yesterday I tore everything apart, got the heads off and the cross hatching still looked really good. Now I'm not trying to spend gobs of money, I'm just trying to piece together a decent motor for my z71. Its pretty dirty, whats the best method of cleaning a short block without using a bunch of solvents ?

As for the build, I was thinking of doing 243/799heads, nnbs intake and longtube, or ls3 heads and the accomadating truck intake. All parts will be stock pull offs, nothing will be ported, just put on. Where to start ?

Well that depends how youre gonna use the truck... either head would be a good choice. The L92 flows better, but compression will be lower and they will not make nearly the bottom end that the 243/799 can.

How aggressive of a cam were you thinking? If you dont want to go with a big cam and low to mid torque is the goal then i vote 243, but if you want to go with a decent sized cam and want it to scream up top then I think the square ports will be a clear winner.

If I was you and you do decide to go with square port heads I would have them milled to get your desired compression... that should be cheap enough.

Really just want a nicely setup 6.0 for it, really don't want a big cam as occasionally I do tow with it. I'm thinking 243/799, a small cam with good low/mid range

Although the following Car Craft cam test was on a 5.3, it illustrates how much torque loss there is when you cam too big. It's all about cylinder pressure for a truck. Keep the overlap to a minimum for towing.

Just did a Lq4/LS3 build and the thing screams after 4,000. Just ordered my 5.13 gears to get my low end power back and will do stall down the road.

LS3 heads make some really nice power but its on the high end, I wouldn't use them unless you run a stall.
