need some advice on a 5.3
#1
My car is a 99 GMC 5.3 Z71 with 3.73 gears. I'm completely stock exept for a drop in K&N, the EGR mod, and a descreened MAF. I know these mods don't add up to more than 10 hp or so. I have a friend that has a 96 jeep cherokee with the straight 6 and he kills me(it only ways like 3000 lbs or something close). If we go from a roll i can hold my own but off the line my truck has nothing until 3000 rpms or so. By that time hes got 2-3 car lengths on me. What are some cheap mods of any that will improve my low end. Is there something wrong with it being so slow off the line? It will chirp the tires for a split second and then just seems to die until 3000 rpms or so. I know a stall convertor would make great improvement but can't go that far yet. It has new plugs, wires, new fuel pump and new fuel filter and I've cleaned the injectors(bad gas caused a lot of problems) The truck has 130,000 miles on it and the tranny still shifts good and the motor is in great shape. I know the O2 sensors need to be replaced soon, would this kill low end torque if the sensor was old and lazy? Would intake and exhaust put me in front or will I have to get more serious? Thanks a lot guys.

If you are going for cheap, replace your muffler with a good freflowing one, get an underdrive pully and/or electric fans. You could also look into a programmer to raise your shift points up. That way if he does get you off the line, you have a better chance of reeling him in.

Hey dude if you know how to install a cam, there is a stock 5.3 cam out of a 2000 on ebay for 50 cents and I doubt it will sell for much more than that. That cam will help you through the whole powerband and add 15 hp over your 1999 cam.

Thanks a lot guys, I made a homemade cold air and that made a little difference and am planning on an exhaust very soon as well. Eventually I would like to get a small cam in there along with a high stall convertor when the tranny goes. With 130,000 miles on it I don't want to push it to hard. Thanks a lot
