Why a new belt? Does the new alternator have a different size pulley?

yes. there is an alternator in the For sale section right now from a 2003 Escalade, should be a 145 amp

Thanks everyone for your help.....Thats what I like about this site, everyone is so helpful.....

Well a found a place Stricker Auto Parts. They have one off a 2003 Yukon XL, part number 10464476, same as Thunder550 stated.....

I dont understand about needing a different belt though?

Also, do I need to modify anything or will it just bolt on......

it will bolt right on. about the belt: when you look at the casings of the two alternators, the 145 amp is larger, the belt is about 1" too short, just go ask for a belt for a 2003 Escalade (or Denali or whatever) with the 145 amp alternator... also you can see etching in the case where it states what amperage it is, it's very faint, but it is visible from the driver side toward the top on the casing
