welp,
been driving the truck for a day, and I am having bad cooling problems.
If I romp on the truck a few times, my temps go sky high...
If I am cruising on the freeway, or I am able to keep I constant speed I am fine..
seems to be only when I romp on it pretty good..
fans are working, but need some ideas as to where to go next..
I know the rad is big enough as it keeps it cool when driving at a higher speed.
any help is welcome..

Thermostat could be sticking or water pump is going... do you have electric fans?

 

You sure your fans are working properly? You know I've been having major issues with mine. Should have that problem worked out tomorrow with the addition of the Nelson Fan Harness. Other than that I would think thermostat or water pump.

I know you just got your truck back, anything worked on that could be causing the issue. I know you were having some cooling issues prior. Perhaps air in the coolant line somewhere. Also perhaps you need to flush the radiator. What wiring system you using for the fans? If nelson harness, maybe the fans aren't set right in the tune.

Anyways, let me know if you need some help with anything. I'm not that far from ya.

 

Fans would have been my guess, but you said they are working....*usually* a sticking thermo will make it overheat all the time. I will say water pump.

Also... this is gonna sound odd.. but which way are your fans spinning.. are they blowing air INTO the engine bay or sucking it out. If its sucking it out than it will create a dam of air when your driving since air is trying to be forced through the radiator.

 

fans are spinning correctly..
water pump was just changed out a year ago..
I could possible see the thermastat as being the problem.
but it stays cool while driving on the freeway..., and if it gets hot while driving around I can get on the freeway, and it will start to come back down.
and Curtis, I am using the Nelson harness as well...

 

What is your antifreeze to water mix ratio.

You should be running 15 to 20 % antifreeze and the rest water with one pint of Purple Ice.

And make sure you don't have a air pocket in the system

Next time it gets hot check the coolent level in the tank.

 

coolant level was up in the tank..
I havnt messed with the coolant since I swapped the cam a year ago.
And I also bought a bottle of the Ice this after noon..
I was going to try to swap the bottom hose out tonight thinking it might be I am colapsing the hose when I get on it..

 

so how much antifreeze for the radiator???
in other words
how much fluid does the radiator hold?

 

I don't have a chart for that.

What I did was drain the system of everything. Add one gallon of 50/50 permix antifreeze and fill the rest with water and added the pint of Purple Ice just before I reconnected the upper hose to the tank.
